KB Businesses Scrutinised In Joint Operation
Kuala Belait - Five enforcement agencies in the Belait District joined forces yesterday morning to inspect eight business premises in Kuala Belait in an effort to ensure adequate levels of cleanliness, safe working conditions, the "halalness" of food served and also proper recruitment of foreign workers in the country.
In the op Nation codenamed "Cegah 03/09", raiding parties came across untidy wiring connections, expired frozen foods, unsatisfactory hygiene and cleanliness as well improper housekeeping practices.
The eight business premises included department stores, restaurants, convenience stores, barber shops, a tailoring shop and a dhobi (laundry service). The operation was led by Awg Morni bin Hj Zakaria from the Belait District Office.
Fire and Rescue officials in the inspection team checked on the safety aspects of each business premise, such as proper storage of fire extinguishers and proper electrical wire connections in accordance with the standards set by the Fire and Rescue and Electrical departments.
Officers from the Belait Halal Food Section, meanwhile, inspected the meat sold in supermarkets and department stores and served in restaurants to ensure that they were all halal, while officers from the Labour Department in Kuala Belait inspected documents to check on the legality of foreign workers hired by the respective businesses.
For their part in the operation, officers from Health Services Kuala Belait checked on the preparation, handling and storage of food in an effort to ensure the business premises meet national standards of hygiene and cleanliness.
In their effort to enforce laws under the Minor Offences Act, officers from the Enforcement Unit of the Belait District Office also took the opportunity to observe the garbage disposal methods practised by each of the eight businesses.
Awg Morni said such irregularities will be acted upon, adding that the unit will take necessary measures - such as issuing closure notices or warning letters to ensure compliance with the laws and regulations pertaining to businesses.-- Courtesy of Borneo Bulletin
