Bandar Seri Begawan - Well-Known local cueists Ak Mohd Saiful Azri bin Pg Roslee and Ahmad Taufiq bin M Murni, have been selected to represent Brunei Darussalam in the cue sport events at the 3rd Borneo Games from Nov 29 to Dec 6.
It's the first time that cue sports has been included as one of the sports to be contested at the Borneo Games. Brunei will be taking part in the 9-ball doubles, 9-ball singles and 8-ball singles events.
Brunei cue sports head coach Lim Tat Hwe said in an interview: "I am confident that we can snatch at least a medal for the country at the Borneo Games this year.. I have no reason to think my players couldn't."
"Both local cueists have ample experience playing overseas and are capable of winning medals. In Taiwan's 119th 9-ball elite players and 227`h 10-ball professional players tournament, Ahmad Taufiq was ranked ninth in both categories while in the Malaysia's Golden 9-ball invitational championship, he managed to enter the quarterfinals," Lim highlighted.
However, he also warned that since cue sports is a new event, the Brunei team have no way of knowing the strength of their opponents.
"I think most probably the toughest games will be against Sabah or Sarawak. They have some good players but I know that our players are capable of beating them."
"We have been maintaining our form and training continuously everyday for the past years. And these two players have been in training for years," the coach added.
Ahmad Taufiq in another interview said: "I think we have a better chance of getting medals in the 9-ball doubles and 9-ball singles events."
"I am used to partnering Ak Mohd Saiful Azri in 9-ball doubles and I think we have a good chance. For 9-ball singles, I hope that l can start off well in the competition and continue to carry on the momentum."
Meanwhile, Ak Mohd Saiful said he is ready for the games following the hard work he had put in.
"I feel that in the singles event it will be tough but I'm quite confident of winning a medal in the doubles event with Ahmad Taufiq. -- Courtesy of Borneo Bulletin
