Go For Relevant Jobs, Technical Grads Told

Bandar Seri Begawan - The Acting Permanent Secretary at the Ministry of Education called on students graduating from Pusat Latihan Mekanik (PLM) to take on "relevant" jobs, as the Government of His Majesty the Sultan and Yang Di-Pertuan of Brunei Darussalam has invested much in the development of technical education in the country.

Awang Hj Suhaila Hj Abd Karim, who was speaking during the launching of PLM's Open Day yesterday, said that the educational institution has to keep abreast on the latest developments in order to produce high-quality programmes that are "well accepted by the industry". This is especially important as the number of students who enrol into PLM continues to grow, he added.

The Ministry of Education's acting permanent secretary, meanwhile, lauded the private sector's continued support to PLM by providing training equipment for students' practical lessons.

At yesterday's event, Bengkel Kereta Berakas contributed two engines - a 1996 Suzuki Escudo 2.0 Diesel engine and a Suzuki Vitara 2.0 Petrol engine - as well as SRS airbags, a car body (Hyundai Accent) and car body panels to PLM.

Awang Hj Suhaila Hj Abd Karim, who was the guest of honour at yesterday's event, encouraged students graduating from PLM to seize the golden opportunity and to support the nation's aspirations of producing knowledgeable and skilled individuals.

He also congratulated PLM for publishing its first newsletter, "Suara PLM".
As one of the technical education institutions under the Ministry of Education, PLM aims to produce a skilled human resource, particularly in the automotive field.

This is in line with the automotive industry's current needs, and it is hoped that efforts made by the centre will be able to produce a knowledgeable, skilful, dedicated and highly-motivated pool of human resource. Meanwhile, Cikgu Suriani Julaihi, the chairperson of yesterday's event, said that PLM believes that an institution was more likely to see success if it obtains community involvement proactively.

"This has been taken seriously by the centre through its Community Guidance Services," she said, adding that cooperation and support from the community would strengthen PLM's hopes of becoming a "Centre of Excellence in Automotive Engineering".

The success of the "Diploma of Excellence" at the Asean Skills Competition and the Proton Export Distributor Competition, in which PLM student Awg Fadhul Rahman Bakri emerged as the third place winner, are just-some of the achievements recently made by the centre.
The guest of honour, meanwhile, presented certificates of appreciation to sponsors and contributors of yesterday's event namely Bengkel Kereta Berakas, Premier Automobiles, Worldwide Motor, Autotools Marketing Company, Sin Hup Huat, Sing Hiap Hin, Concepts Commercial Suppliers, CF King Enterprise, Zimac Silican Technologies and G4S Security Services.

The guest of honour also toured several classes at PLM and exhibition booths that were participated by, amongst others, Premier Automobile and Worldwide Motor, who have continuously made contributions to technical institutions in the country. -- Courtesy of Borneo Bulletin
