Retiree Crying For Help

Bandar Seri Begawan - With only $2 left in his pocket, a retired serviceman, 42-year-old Kamis bin Mudin, has four children plus a grandchild to feed.

They all live in a dilapidated house with no electricity, which he inherited from his parents. After years of patiently waiting for something that could lift him and his family out of poverty, he is now appealing for help.

Financially and emotionally, all his children have lost their means to continue their education.

The Bulletin yesterday visited the family at No 112 Kg Lumapas following an alert from a concerned citizen.

Kamis bin Mudin has lost hope. He said he had already submitted a form to Baitul Mal for help. Until now, he has not received any response.

He said he earns just over $400 a month from his army pension, but he recently took out a $12,000 bank loan to repay an earlier loan, leaving him with just $200 left per month.

That money, he said, is not enough to raise a family of five. He couldn't even afford the cheapest books for his children. Education is important, but food is more important at the moment.

Once a while, he uses a car battery to provide electric power to his house, which he learned when he was in the army. However, he is crying inside because he cannot give his children the proper life they deserve.

Last week, the Bulletin reported on Mohd Sallehen bin Mohaddin, 24, who has to ask for money to feed his wife and baby. He said he tried to find work even as a helper at construction sites. He and his family are now living in a dilapidated and long vacated Kg Ayer house.

Sallehen said he has high hopes after he received several visits recently from the authorities. He hopes to get help to open a business to support his family. -- Courtesy of Borneo Bulletin

Hope the real poor can get the Zakat money
written by Jun , November 19, 2009
I just hope that the "real poor" who are suffering like these 2 men on this article can get the proper help from the relevant government agencies or some amount from the Zakat money... it's sad to think that some other people get Zakat money and use it to buy car or whatever gadgets (I don't know if this true as I only read and learn about it in Brudirect) while these two men can't even buy decent food for their families... I don't know what is the criteria for the Baitulmal or any government agencies requires before they can give assistance to them but I personally think they seriously need some help.

Besides zakat, in my own opinion, baik tah dibagi makanan, water supply & electricity, instead of membagi duit...
Or why dont we give them vouchers? utk ia membeli brg & minyak kerita.
he did apply for a loan, um.. I'm wondering, for what? and where did the money go?
