‘Thurath' Books Reference For Islamic Studies
Bandar Seri Begawan - Traditional Jawi texts or Thurath books should be used as reference materials for studying Islamic Knowledge, said a senior official of the Ministry of Religious Affairs (MoRA) yesterday.
Permanent Secretary of MoRA, Hj Md Mandi Pehin Orang Kaya DiGadong Seri Diraja Dato Laila Utama Hj Abdul Rahman said this during the Talaqqi Traditional Texts Education Seminar.
The seminar was held at the Seri Begawan Religious Teachers University College (KUPU SB).
"However, understanding the traditional Jawi texts is not easy as the language style is not prevalent in the current education context," he said.
He added: "Thurath books should be taught by experts capable of reading and understanding their contents."
In holding the seminar, Hj Md Mandi said that it was clear that Thurath books were significant in the country's religious education system as well as among the new generation. "In this respect, it is not impossible that KUPU SB would one day take a leap forward by converting the Thurath books into digital form," he asserted.
He also reminded the participants that they must remember that knowledge can be obtained digitally or accessed online.
He added that teachers remained ever more important in this respect.
"The role of teachers and lecturers remain relevant because they serve as a medium for students' reference in terms of making sure that the knowledge obtained by them are true and not designed by irresponsible authorities," he said.
A total of 300 participants attended the two-day seminar which ends today.
Themed "Mempertahan dan Memperkasa Pendidikan Teks Traditional", which is loosely translated as "preserving and empowering traditional education text".
The seminar features six scholars who will be presenting and discussing their working papers and aspects of Thurath knowledge.
One of the speakers is the State Mufti Pehin Datu Seri Maharaja Dato Paduka Seri Setia (Dr) Ustaz IIj Abdul Aziz Juned who will be presenting a paper entitled "Pengunaan Kitab Turath Sebagai Sumber Hukum Dalam Konteks Brunei Darussalam" which translates as "the use of Thurath books as a source of law in the Brunei context".
Other speakers for the seminars come from the teaching force of KUPU SB.
Amongst the objectives of the event is to educate on the role and importance of traditional texts in the spread of Islam.
Another objective is to expand the scope of the usage of traditional texts in the society as one of the efforts is to produce students who have the capabilities to be an Islam ulama who is committed to disseminating the knowledge.-- Courtesy of The Brunei Times
