World Town Planning Day To Focus On Youth
To be celebrated tomorrow in Brunei, the event is held to raise the country's youth's awareness on the importance of planning to develop sustainable forms of development.
"Unlike previous years where our targeted groups were professionals, such as architects and developers, this year we changed our theme to cater more towards the younger generation because they are the future," said Town and Country Planning Officer Marsiti Omar during an earlier press briefing this month.
The department also said that fostering and inculcating town planning values within the younger generation would help them understand and appreciate the central role town planners play in shaping the physical environment, and thus delivering a conducive environs for a balanced lifestyle.
The event will also educate youths on the values and principles of town planning and introduce them to the various processes involved in formulating a town planning concept.
To achieve this, the department, with the cooperation of the Ministry of Education, has carried out a number of activities such as an essay competition for Form four and rive students - 'Planning for Real" competition for pre-university students (Sixth form) - and a "Planning Project" competition for technical and university undergraduates respectively from July to October this year.
Scheduled to launch tomorrow's celebration at the International Convention Centre is Minister of Development Pehin Orang Kaya Hamzah Pahlawan Dato Seri Setia Hj Abdullah Begawan Mudim Dato Paduka Hj Bakar.
"Activities lined up for the launching include a career talk on town planning and presentations by winners of planning competitions," said the department.
An exhibition displaying the plans and models produced by the students participating in the competition will also be set up.
A charity walkathon and bicyclethon will be held for the staff of the department at the Jalan Menteri Besar recreation park on November 22.
The World Town Planning Day, celebrated globally on November 8, is a special day to recognise and promote the role of planning in creating liveable communities.
It is also held to draw attention to the progress of urban and regional planning, while highlighting the valuable contributions sound planning has made to the quality of global human settlements and their environment. -- Courtesy of The Brunei Times
