Bandar Seri Begawan - The 2nd International Cardiac Conference Brunei Darussalam 2009 organised by Gleneagles JPMC was held at the Empire Hotel & Country Club yesterday, where several topics were presented and discussed.

The biannual conference served as a means of providing quick updates to the regional medical community on the trends, existing and emergent alike, as they progress globally, said the GJPMC CEO in his welcoming address.

The programme yesterday saw 13 clinical speakers in all, who spoke on key aspects of what is becoming either regular practice and even expectations in much of the developed world, changes in the way medicine is viewed, and patient care practised.

The conference covered all aspects of cardiac issues - from the time a person is born (in the form of congenital diseases) to the time he is faced with a failing heart; as well as looking at the possibilities of mechanical support.

The morning session began with 'New Concepts in Coronary Artery Disease' chaired by RIPAS Hospital Specialist Cardiologist Dr Money Jacob and GJPMC Consultant Cardiologist Dr T Ganesan.

Three topics were presented: Acute Myocardial Infarction - Time is Muscle, Is Primary PCI the Gold Standard?; Sudden Cardiac Death - Can it Be Prevented?; and Risk Factors and Early Detection of CAD.

The topics were delivered by Consultant Cardiologist (Singapore) Dr Charles Chan, Consultant Cardiologist & Cardiac Electro Physiologist (Singapore) Dr Teo Wee Siong and RIPAS Hospital Specialist Cardiologist Dr Ramachandran Nair respectively.

Later, a Heart Surgery symposium saw topics presented on New Look Cardiac Surgery: Percutaneous Aortic and Mitral Valve Surgery and New Generation Ventricular Assist Devices and Advances in Heart Valve Repair and Replacement Surgery by Consultant Cardio Thoracic Surgeon (China) Dr Kong Ye and Consultant Cardio thoracic Surgeon (Thailand) Dr Suchart Chaiyaroj.

The morning session concluded with Congenital Heart Disease chaired by medical Panaga Health Centre Director Dr Peter Tay and JPMC Medical Director Sdn Bhd Dr Parsad Karat.

Presentations were delivered by RIPAS Hospital Specialist Paediatrician Dr Hjh Rohayati Hj Md Taib (Child with a Heart Murmur), Consultant Paediatric Cardiologist (Singapore) Dr William Yip who spoke on Challenges in the Management of Adult with Congenital Heart Disease, and Head/Senior Consultant Pediatric Cardio Thoracic Surgery KK Women and Children Hospital Singapore Dr KK Ong who discussed `Congenital Heart Disease Surgery Can Save Lives.'

The afternoon saw a plenary lecture and symposium on the advances in the treatment of heart failure as well as recent advances in interventional cardiology & pulmonary function testing. -- Courtesy of Borneo Bulletin
