Beliat School Gets High-Tech Science Lab

Kuala Belait - The Brunei Shell Petroleum Company Sdn Bhd (BSP) yesterday unveiled a state-of-the-art science laboratory at a school in Belait as pan of its efforts to assist the government to further develop the nation's human resources capabilities.

The new science laboratory for the Sayyidina Ali Secondary School in Kg Pandan dubbed the Ibnu Sina Laboratory is hoped to generate early interest in the oil and gas industry among students by boosting their interests in subjects like Science, Mathematics and Technology.

The laboratory is a pilot project undertaken by the company as its continuous contribution towards a sustainable community development in Brunei.

BSP Deputy Managing Director Hj Zainal Abidin Hj Mohd Ali who was on hand to officiate the laboratory yesterday said that equipping the school with such a facility was considered as part of the company's objective in its social investment programme to promote the active learning of core Science topics to complement the Ministry of Education's new education system or SPN21.

He said, "Just like how BSP has to constantly evolve to stay on top in the oil and gas industry, it is through strengthening our people's capabilities that we further develop new ideas and solutions."

In his speech, the deputy managing director called on the school teachers to take up the challenge of nurturing their students' love for science and technology by helping them to fulfil their potential as future leaders who will drive and build Brunei's capabilities through science and technology.

"We are advocators of innovation," said Hj Zainal Abidin, "and today is simply another stepping stone for us in our constant pursuit of knowledge."

The laboratory can accommodate up to 40 students and is installed with safety features like a fume cupboard and emergency shower with eyewash. The facility also comes with a range of information and communication technology (ICT) tools such as a multimedia projector and a flat screen television for presentations.

Also present at the soft launch yesterday was Cheong Huat Joo, Principal of Sayyidina Ali Secondary School, teachers and officials from the Ministry of Education.-- Courtesy of The Brunei Times
