Bandar Seri Begawan - In line with Brunei Darussalam's objective of achieving it's 20 per cent self-sufficiency target by 2010, the Ministry of Industry and Primary Resources' (MIPR), on behalf of the Government of His Majesty the Sultan and Yang Di-Pertuan of Brunei Darussalam, signed an Implementing Arrangement with the Philippine Department of Agriculture to promote cooperation in the research, development, training and extension aspects of rice production between Brunei and the Republic of the Philippines, through the DA-Philippine Rice Research Institute (DA Phil-Rice).

The signing ceremony was held at the Empire Hotel and Country Club yesterday evening, in conjunction with the 31st AMAF and 9th AMAF+3.

The Minister of Industry and Primary Resources, Pehin Orang Kaya Seri Utama Dato Seri Setia Hj Yahya bin Begawan Mudim Dato Paduka Hj Bakar, signed on behalf of His Majesty's Government, while Philippine Secretary of Agriculture Mr Arthur C Yap signed for the Republic of the Philippines.

Among those present to witness the signing was Dato Paduka Hj Mohd Hamid bin Hj Mohd Jaafar, Permanent Secretary at the Ministry of Industry and Primary Resources.

Under the Implementing Arrangement, the Department of Agriculture, MIPR and the DA-Phil Rice will collaborate in working towards a common goal as they look for ways to meet the future needs of their respective countries.

Both sides had earlier agreed on the need for an Implementing Arrangement involving detailed work plans on Rice Research and Development (R&D) that can be developed between the two countries.-- Courtesy of Borneo Bulletin
