The police succeeded in tracing back money amounting to B$47,990 that was stolen from RHB Bank in Yayasan Complex in the capital in a break-in and theft incident on August 19.
The House Break-In and Car Theft Unit of the Criminal Investigation Department of the Royal Brunei Police Force said yesterday that a 56-year-old man was arrested nearly a month later, on September 17, on suspicion of stealing the money from the bank's ATM machine.
Tools such as a steel hammer and gloves were reportedly used in the theft. The suspect also smashed the bank's front glass door, the police said, adding that the incident occurred sometime between 6pm and 12 midnight.
The suspect faces a jail sentence of three years and six months starting-November 5, for committing offences under section 457 of the Penal Code, Chapter 22 for the break-in as well as section 427, Chapter 22 for vandalising the property.
The police said that cash worth B$10,200 was found hidden in the luggage compartment of the car belonging to the suspect, and that some of the Brunei dollars had been changed to Indonesian currency to the value of six million Indonesian Rupiah.
Some of the Brunei notes were also found concealed inside several Hari Raya green packets.
The House Break-In and Theft Unit thanked the CID personnel at the Central Police Station for their prompt action at the scene, as well as the Yayasan Complex security staff and other relevant parties for their assistance.
The police welcome any tip-offs from the public that would help them in their continuous efforts to tackle criminal activities. The public can report any knowledge of theft cases to the Unit at 2232001 ext 0 or 412 or 8898905. They can also contact the police hotline 993 or approach the nearest police station. -- Courtesy of Borneo Bulletin
