PTA hold IET Talk For Chung Hua's PSR Student
Bandar Seri Begawan - The Parent Teacher Association (PTA) for Chung Hua Middle School, Kuala Belait organised a special awareness talk for its PSR students during their two-week activity.
The talk entitled "Energy: Understanding Consumption of Electricity" was delivered by Mr Terry Douglas Jayasuriya who spoke on behalf of the Institution of Engineering and Technology (IET), Brunei Darussalam Network'.
The Deputy Principal, Ms Jaime Lim in her opening remarks introduced the speaker to some 70 students and teachers that gathered in the library.
The PTA in previous years hat* successfully conducted the Skills Camp for the PSR students. As the students progress in the school's education system, it is important that they are equipped with mathematical and analytical skills that are so necessary for their future well-being and survival in an increasingly challenging technological environment.
In this respect, the IET seeks to provide wholesome educational and exciting activities to students by conducting Discovery Camps with one ofthe objectives to help students discover engineering in a practical way.
However, the PSR students had something different this year instead of the usual camp. The talk was conducted to substantiate the students' understanding of Science, Geography and Mathematics.
There was an interactive session on energy, climate change, and global warming. There was also a remarkable and interesting discussion on tsunamis, volcano eruptions and earthquakes, to name a few, amongst the students and the speaker. The IET had previously donated posters in facilitating the teaching of Science to the school.
The lET operates as a technical publisher and public champion of science, engineering and technology, as well as a qualifying and membership body. With over 150,000 members, and in excess of 100 groups of volunteers supporting its activities around the world, the JET is Europe's largest membership based Engineering Institution.
The IET Brunei Darussalam Network aspires to pursue its work with schools to make "science and engineering" real in the classrooms.
A token of appreciation was presented to the speaker by Cikgu Hamidah Hj Matassan who cordially expressed thanks for the continual support in conducting educational activities.
In his closing remarks, Mr Terry Douglas Jayasuriya, who is also the Chairman of the school's PTA, humbly counts it an unassuming privilege to impart knowledge and speak with the young enthusiastic minds, hoping it would trigger a life-long yearning for a deeper understanding and knowledge in science, and its widespread applications in today's technology.-- Courtesy of Borneo Bulletin
