Concern Over Neglected Chinese Cemetery In Belait

Kuala Belait - Residents of Kampong Sungai Teraban expressed concern over a desolated Chinese cemetery which has been neglected over the years, creating an eyesore within the remote village in the Belait District.

Five Chinese gravestones in a state of decay and neglect still stand silently within the village area located across the Belait riverside and are overgrown with bushes and trees.

Few of the graves are marked with Chinese inscription and picture of the deceased, while some are left unmarked and severely damaged.

Dyg Maikassum binte Kadir, a 91-year-old elderly, has been residing in the village for over 40 years and she claimed that the abandoned cemetery belongs to the Chinese immigrants who have migrated from the neighbouring countries and settled in the village.

She added that the deserted graves on the abandoned site could have been there since the early 40s and it was built for the convenience of their descendants who would travel to the Belait River to pay their offerings and respect.

However, over the past years, the old tombstones have been left to decay and ruin without any sign of visitors.

Dyg Maikussum added that for as long as she could remember, she never had a ghostly encounter and the residents are neither terrified of the thought that the abandoned cemetery could be haunted.

However, a resident staying across the site suggests that the relevant authorities should consider tearing it down altogether as the graves have been neglected over the years and fell into oblivion.

The residents are left uncertain whether-to hack the tall grass, weeds and dense bushes obscuring the gravestones.

The abandoned tombstones tucked in the area of the riverside village represented a flagrant eyesore and residents suggested for the graves to be demolished and pave way for potential developments.-- Courtesy of Borneo Bulletin
