Workshop Outlines Key Principles In Health Research Blueprint

Bandar Seri Begawan - A workshop on `Health Policy Planning and Health Systems Research -A National Health Research Blueprint' came to a close on Saturday evening with a number of concrete key principles, which have been identified for the ministry.

During a certificate presentation ceremony to mark the end of the workshop, Prof Phua Kai Hong from Lee Kuan Yew School of Public Policy, National University of Singapore delivered a summary of the workshop by saying that all the four groups who had participated in the course have almost the same mission statement that ranges from wanting an advance research in the improvement of health to building a foundation for health research.

"It was also aimed at providing a base to raise the quality of health care in Brunei, to contribute as well as to disseminate health knowledge and innovative technology and finally, to promote training and development for health researchers," he said.

"There was also wide censuses to push public health issues to the top, recognising non-communicable diseases and the trend of obesity reflected on the lifestyle and culture of the community," he said.

The professor from National University of Singapore also pointed out that the consensuses of the importance in linking promoting Research and Development with the ministry's strategy map of Vision 2035 `Together towards a healthy nation' were also raised.

The Strategic Directions or objectives that are linked with the Ministry's Vision 2035 consist of Epidemiological trends and public health issues, disease burden or economic costs of diseases, social and environmental research, health policy and systems research as well as basic and applied clinical research and comparative regional and international studies.

Pehin Orang Kaya Indera Pahlawan Dato Seri Setia Awg Haji Suyoi bin Haji Osman, Minister of Health, who attended the dinner reception presented certificates to all 46 participants of the workshop comprising professionals in various fields of the ministry.

The main objectives of the workshop are to identify the agenda and main fields in health research, to reach the target and deliver the health policy and research as well as to provide pharmaceutical research and ethics to prepare the template in `Health Research Blueprint' for the ministry.

Pehin Orang Kaya Perkerma Laila Diraja Dato Paduka Awang Haji Hazair bin Haji Abdullah, Deputy Minister of Health, in his remarks during the opening of the workshop on Oct 29 said that the ministry understands the main role of research in each organisation.

"Research can create an important proof of policy changes, which could lead to necessary policy change in order to arrive at the decision," he said,

Also present at the reception were Dato Paduka Awg Hj Abdul Salam bin Abdul Momin, Permanent Secretary at the Ministry of Health; Hj Rosli bin Hj Mustapa, Deputy Permanent Secretary of Health (Finance and Administration) and other officials from the ministry. -- Courtesy of Borneo Bulletin
