Encouraging Turnout For 'Cabaran Joran 2009'

Bandar Seri Begawan - The Department of Municipal's "Cabaran Joran 2009" held in conjunction with the changing of Bandar Brunei to Bandar Seri Begawan received an overwhelming response as roads leading to the Handicraft Centre, the venue of the event, was packed with spectators and participants alike.

From as early as 6am, participants were already picking their best spots to make their catch of the day along the Brunei River, with some coming much earlier just to get the right spot.

Present as the guest of honour at the prize presentation ceremony later in the afternoon was Permanent Secretary at the Ministry of Home Affairs, Awg Hj Mawardi Hj Abdullah, who presented prizes to the respective winners. The early morning event was launched by Chairman of the Board of Municipal, Pg Hj Mohd Ali Pg Hj Othman.

The event was aimed at to strengthening ties among the officers and staff, government agencies involved as well as members of the public participating in the challenge aside from enlivening Bandar Seri Begawan as a tourist destination and a choice for weekend leisure.

Yesterday's challenge that took place along the Brunei River starting from Jalan Residency up to the Brunei Arts and Handicraft Centre saw four categories being competed, namely the quickest time of catch, length measure, weight measure and weight measure of one fish category.

The change in name from Bandar Brunei to Bandar Seri Begawan is commemorated every year on October 4 and this year marks the 39th anniversary. -- Courtesy of Borneo Bulletin
