250 Fishing Enthusiasts Cast Their Lines For Competition
Bandar Seri Begawan - A Fishing competition that saw a participation of more than 250 sport fishing fanatics yesterday was also an indicator that determines water cleanliness through the observations of the number of fish species recorded and the transmigratory pollution on Brunei water.
In conjunction with the celebrations of the 39th anniversary of the renaming of Brunei Town to Bandar Seri Begawan, the Municipal Department of the Ministry of Home Affairs has co-chaired a fishing competition "Cabaran Joran 2009", with the Department of Fisheries under the Ministry of Industry and Primary Resources (MIPR) that was responsible for the judging.
"This (the fishing competition) event is also aimed at indicating the effectiveness of our constant cleaning activities conducted on the Brunei river," said Administrator of Information Communications Technology (ICT) and E-government at the Municipal Board Adi Syohreni Abdul Hadi, who was also the chairperson of the event.
Trans-migratory pollution on Brunei water has always been a constant problem in the past due to the unhealthy practise of reckless rubbish dumping into the water by residents of Kg Ayer, she said.
According to her observation, the situation has now improved as there was less river pollution recently.
"Obviously, today we have seen and recorded more varieties of fish species caught by the event participants which should mean that the water is less polluted and healthier to be inhabited by other riverine fish species," related Adi Syohreni, adding that the cleanliness level has indeed improved.
The event was aimed at strengthening the relationship between the officers and staff from various government agencies involved as well as the public who took part in the competition. It was also held to promote Bandar Seri Begawan as a popular recreational destination during the weekend.
The competition which started at Sam, ended at noon and was divided into four categories namely "the fastest catch", "the longest catch", "total weight" (group) and "total weight" for individual catch.
Chairman of Municipal Board Pg Hj Md Ali Pg Hj Othman launched the competition which took place along the banks of Brunei River, close to the Arts and Handicraft Centre in the capital.
Present to handover the prizes to the winners was Permanent Secretary at the Ministry of Home Affairs Hj Mawardi Hj Abdullah.-- Courtesy of The Brunei Times
