UBD To Host Korean Language & Culture Week
Bandar Seri Begawan - A make-your-own-kimchi-and-taste-it demonstration will be conducted by spouses of Korean diplomats and embassy staff next Saturday during the 2009 Korean Language and Culture Week at the Chancellor Hall of Universiti Brunei Darussalam.
Kimchi is the spicy and crispy Korean dish made from cut cabbage leaves marinated in salt then filled with finely chopped garlic and ginger and pureed pears, then fermented all winter-long in ceramic pots.
UBD in collaboration with the Embassy of the Republic of Korea will be hosting the 2009 Korean Language & Culture Week from November 4 to November 7 at the Chancellor Hall. The Korean Embassy said it believes that the upcoming Korean week and kimchi festival will serve as an invaluable asset in solidifying the 25-year-old friendship between Korea and Brunei since diplomatic relations were set up in 1984.
In September 1983, the Consulate General of Korean was opened in Bandar Seri Begawan, which was converted to a full embassy in January 1984 when diplomatic relations was established. The annual Korean week launched in 2006 will give Bruneian a chance to learn more about Korea, its language, way of life, cuisine, and arts, the embassy said. It will also showcase recent developments in the Korea-Brunei relations, including His Majesty the Sultan and Yang Di-Pertuan of Brunei Darussalam's visit to Korea in June 2009, when he attended the Korea-Asean Commemorative Summit, where the Korea-Asean FTA on investment was signed.
To celebrate the 25th anniversary of diplomatic ties, the Saranghaeyo (I Love) Korea Festival presented Korea House and B-Boy Breakout in Seria and Bandar Seri Begawan.
In 2008, over 10,000 Korean tourists have visited the Sultanate.
In 2005, the Korean language subject was opened at the UBD. One Korean professor, Dr Kim Ji Yeon, was sent by the Korean government and has been working as Korean language lecturer since 2006, said Mr II Park, Deputy Chief of Mission of Korean Embassy in Brunei.
In 2008, the Korean government has included Brunei as a partner country for its government scholarship programme for foreign countries. Six Brunei students have benefited from this programme in 2008 and 2009, he said.
He added that UBD has concluded several MOUs for cooperation with Korean universities such as Korean University and Ehwa Women's University. For further information, contact Dr Kim Ji Yeon at 2463001 ext 1847 and Feroz Andy at the Korean Embassy. -- Courtesy of Borneo Bulletin
