Cultural Lesson In Kampong Ayer
Bandar Seri Begawan - Sixty students from Chung Hwa Middle School Bandar Seri Begawan paid a visit to Kampong Ayer after sitting for their P SR examinations. The students from Year IV were led by their teacher Pauline Leena.
The objective of the visit was to gain further understanding of the customs and culture of the Malays who have been living in Kampong Ayer for generations.
The group also visited the house of Penghulu Mukim Tamoi, Pengarah Awang Haji Mokti Salleh.
The students viewed first-hand traditional toys of the Malays such as the gulingtangan, canang tiga and gong.
They were also shown how to make traditional kuih (cakes), as well as baskets and takong from young palm leaves.
They were amazed at the uniqueness of Kampong Ayer in retaining the use of traditional tools as well as the way the residents communicate with one another, their manners as well as their respect for one another.-- Courtesy of Borneo Bulletin
