Bandar Seri Begawan - More air crash exercises are being planned following the drill held at the Brunei International Airport yesterday.
Minister of Communications, Pehin Orang Kaya Seri Kerna Dato Seri Setia Awang Haji Abu Bakar bin Haji Apong, who was present at yesterday's exercise, said in an interview, "It is an annual activity, which is aimed at seeing whether agencies are ready no only the airport authorities, for example the Fire an Rescue Department and others.
"So far I'm satisfied with the performance of the agencies concerned, especially since the weather this afternoon was not planned, so it's a really natural situation. I think the weather has given them a challenge. They didn't expect the rain to come, so it's a good chance for them to show their potential in overcoming climatic changes," said the minister.
Asked if he was happy with how the exercise had gone on, he said, "Yes. Obviously after the completion of this exercise, the authorities concerned during the post mortem would evaluate the strengths and weaknesses of the agencies in addressing respective responsibilities.
"It's too early to comment and to evaluate the efficiency of one's agency. It will be evaluated by one body, and is being done at the control centre."
The minister also spoke of future plans. "This exercise will be confined to this area, but in the future we are expecting to do some exercises outside the vicinity of the airport as air crashes could happen outside the perimeter of the airport.
"We will make an effort to make sure that this kind of exercise will be done in other places.
"Normally this exercise would take place every year, so we are hoping to plan (the next one) maybe next year or the year after that," Pehin Awang Haji Abu Bakar added. -- Courtesy of Borneo Bulletin
