Beehives Exterminated To Ensure Safety Of Public

Bandar Seri Begawan - An Attack by honeybees on an Indonesian worker early this month in Seria has led to measures being taken to exterminate several beehives on the rafters of TelBru's single-storey building near the town area last week.

According to Mr Ang Wah Chung at PPA department of BSP, as the beehive was considered a public threat, a team from the HML/4 department and Bomba BSP successfully exterminated the beehive in 15 minutes with the use of chemicals.

About three beehives were seen on the exterior walls of the single-storey building located next to Chung Ching Middle school.

Reports have been made by customers and members of the public to get remove the beehives that have been there on the rear wall of the building for over a year.

Action was taken after a. swarm of honeybees attacked the male Indonesian worker who was mowing the lawn at that time and chased him all the way to the bus terminal in town.

Fortunately, the worker survived the attack and only suffered a minor swelling on the face.

Ang further told the Borneo Bulletin that similar bee attacks have also occurred in the area two years ago and the department managed to get rid of the hives in the interest of the school students and members of the public.

However, the bees returned and re-built their hives in isolated corners of the building, where the Telbru technicians would normally operate, he added.

He said the honeybees like to claim their spot at empty flats and buildings.

He advised members of the public to contact the fire department and seek professional help to remove or destroy the beehives completely.

Honeybees are normally irritated by sounds of loud machineries and vibrations from lawn mowers or cutters. It is also among the common causes of attacks, he said.

He also issued a warning against the presence of hornets in the district, whose stings could be fatal.
