Vienna Mozart-Trio Woos Crowd With Classical Music

Bandar Seri Begawan - On Their very first performance in Brunei at the Orchid Garden Hotel last night, the Vienna Mozart-Trio of Diethard Auner, Irina Auner and Daniel Auner gave the audience a treat in the world of classical music.

The audience was treated to the music world of famous composers like Joseph Haydn (1732-1809), Kathrina Schirk and Johannes Brahms (1833-1897).

Kathrina Schirk is a young Austrian composer currently popular in the classical music scene.

There was, however, murmurs among the audience that the quality of the venue was not on par with that of the guest performers.

Ahmad Abdul, one of those present at the concert, told The Brunei Times that the environment could have been better, citing the acoustic and lighting as areas that can be improved.

He added though that he understands the constraints met by the organiser as such events will usually not be able to attract a huge turnout, thus making it unviable for them to rent concert halls.

When being informed of the concerns voiced by the audience, John Dalman, Acting Chairman of the Brunei Music Society (SW) said that the objective for them was to make sure the concert is affordable for the public and students.

He commented that nowhere in the world will anyone be able to enjoy this level of performance at the price of $25 quoted for the public. The price for the society members were at $20 and students pays $10.

He said that if they were to use a better venue, the tickets will become too pricy for the general public.

Pearly Tew, a Secondary Three student from St Andrews and a regular at classical music concerts told The Brunei Times that she does not have music lessons in school. She feels that music as a whole is inspiring, and also keeps her calm in life.

She added that students under the new system in her school now do have music classes.

When asked what she thinks of the Brunei classical musk scene, she said for a small country like Brunei, the number of concerts they are getting is quite healthy.

She also commented with a smile that it wouldn't hurt if they had more.
Also present among the audience was Yang Amat Mulia Pg Anak Khairul Khalil Pengiran Syed Hj Jaafari.

The BMS is the organiser for the concert with Teck Guan Holdings being their major sponsor.

In their Southeast Asia tour, the Vienna Mozart-Trio will next be performing privately in Kuala Lumpur for the Austrian Embassy, followed by concerts in Bangkok, Jakarta and Bali.-- Courtesy of The Brunei Times
