Bandar Seri Begawan - One of the steps taken to promote Quran reading is by having events such as the National Youth Musabaqah Tilawatil Quran Reading competition, said Pehin Orang Kaya Setia Pahlawan Dato Seri Setia Dr Awang Haji Ahmad Jumat, Minister of Culture, Youth and Sports. He spoke during the final of the competition yesterday evening.

"In order to be an excellent and shining youth, qualities such as spiritual and good moral values must also be taken into account. "This will further inspire other youths towards joining such competitions in the future," said the minister.

Emerging as the winner in the Qari (male) category was Ak Md Amirul Aiman Pg Hj Marjuki. Ak Amirul also won last year's National Youth Musabaqah Tilawatil Quran Reading competition and has been active in such competitions from an early age.

He has trained under the support of his father, who is a mosque official. Ak Amirul was given the National Youth Musabaqah Tilawatil trophy and $2,000 prize for coming first.

Meanwhile, in the Qariah (female) category, Nor Azriah binti Abdul Aziz nabbed the top spot and brought home the National Youth Musabaqah Tilawatil trophy and $2,000 cash prize.

She too is active in Quran reading events from a young age and has won various competitions. The minister presented the trophies and prizes to the winners. The event took place at the Ministry of Culture, Youth and Sports building in Jalan Kebangsaan.

The event was meant to be a platform for youths to become the nation's representative in the Southeast Asian Youth Musabaqah Tilawatil Quran competition. It also served to promote comradeship through religion and to raise the quality of Quran readers among the youths.
