Preparing For Exams During Ramadhan

Bandar Seri Begawan - Some students yesterday said that they did not have many problems preparing for their upcoming '0' Level examinations despite the Ramadhan period, and advice from teachers and parents were crucial in motivating them.

Mohd Auji Azizi, 16, from Yayasan Sultan Hj Hassanal Bolkiah (YSHHB) Secondary School said that he started preparing for his examinations a month ago.

He explained how he took the time after school to do his "personal study". "1 study after sahur (meal consumed before fasting) before going to school, and then study for two to three hours in the afternoon."

Mohd Auji Azizi said that although some students stayed back to study at school, he prefers to study from home.

"Sometimes, I do feel tired and that I do not have enough energy to study because this is the Ramadhan month, but when I do study, I feel I can concentrate better from home," he said.

He said that he could easily go online at home and ask his teachers questions through the Live@Edu system, when he was unsure of something.
He added that it was important his school motivates students to study during Ramadhan.
"Our school has been motivating us and giving us advise. They (motivate us) by saying that we can do it."

Mohd Auji Azizi said that his teachers have also been helpful over the past few weeks, providing daily tips to students.

"They even ask us to email them or talk to them if we needed any help," he said.
Noor Atikah Hj Abu Bakar, 15, from Pengiran Anak Puteri Hjh Masna Secondary School, said that she and a few friends had been conducting daily study groups after school to help them study better.

"Everyday from 2.30-4.30 pm after our extra classes, we practise Mathematics and Science everyday because they are hard subjects," she said.

She explained that she did not have many problems concentrating on her studies, even though she felt hungry sometimes. "Sometimes I feel tired, but before my revision at home I usually take a nap first."

Noor Atikah said that it was important to keep herself occupied as she is currently preparing for her exams, instead of letting her hunger bother her.

"I try to keep myself busy during this puasa time, so that do not think about being hungry," she said.

She added that it was vital for teachers and parents to motivate students to continue studying hard during this time.

"My Chemistry teacher always motivates us to continue revising during puasa which makes me feel motivated. I feel it is important for parents and teachers to motivate students especially during puasa time," she said.

Sabrina Hj Mahmud, 16, from Yayasan Sultan Hj Hassanal Bolkiah (YSHHB) Secondary School, said that she was trying her best to prepare for her examinations, despite fasting during the day.

"After sahur in the morning, I will study before I go to school for my mock exams. After school, I come home to study in the afternoon and study again before I sleep at 10.30pm," she explained.

She added that even though it was difficult to concentrate and study during Ramadhan, she tried to manage her time to do the best she could.

Siti Nur Afiqah Hj Mohd Sunadi, 16, from STPRI said that she did not let Ramadhan get in the way of studying for her '0' Level examinations.

"I actually think I am concentrating better because '0' Levels is important and I will not let puasa get in the way of studying hard," she said.

She said that she has been practising past year papers as part of her revision at home and started studying a few days ago.

'I go to tuition, but as that is not enough, I also practise doing work at home," she added.
