New Philippine Envoy Lauds Brunei Ties
Bandar Seri Begawan - Newly accredited Philippine Ambassador to Brunei, Mr Alexander B Yano, said Brunei is "a significant factor in the Philippines' quest to find lasting peace and development in Mindanao.
"I am aware that His Majesty the Sultan and Yang Di-Pertuan of Brunei Darussalam is especially interested in helping Mindanao achieve lasting peace, and regional economic growth. I'm glad that my experience in and knowledge of Mindanao issues can now be tapped to help expand its participation in the peace process and the development of that region. I look forward to this new role," said Yano, who served over 37 years in the military and retired last May as general and 38th Chief of Staff of the Armed Forces of the Philippines.
His Majesty received General Yano's credentials as the Philippine ambassador to Brunei Darussalam last Thursday at Istana Nurul Iman.
Ambassador Yano cited the technical cooperation between the Philippines and Brunei through the rice project, another significant breakthrough, which was accented by a ceremonial rice harvest last Monday.
"In the realm of the peace process, Brunei has given its commitment to continue maintaining its contingent in the International Monitoring Team in Mindanao.
"Brunei has provided assistance in the construction of the Grand Mosque in Cotabato City and in improving our Madrasah education programmes by sending Filipino scholars to Universiti Brunei Darussalam," he went on to highlight. -- Courtesy of Borneo Bulletin
