Bandar Seri Begawan - The Brunei Darussalam Scouts Associations (PPNBD) is the host to the 5th Asia-Pacific Region Jamboree on the Air/Internet (JTA/JOTI) aimed at fostering closer ties among scout members in the region and as a preparation for the World JOTA and JOTI scheduled for October.

Some 30 Rover Scouts participated in the two-day event organised by Singapore Scouts Associations which ended yesterday.

The JOTA and KM utilises the Amateur Radio through the scout's call-sign V85BS, and the Internet, with which the participants communicate with other scouts on current events, get introduced to new members. Having discussions and promoting Brunei's tourism, according to Aliyous -Tea a Rover Scout.

"Not a lot of people know where Brunei is. All this while we have been promoting the country as tourists' location," he said.

He added that it is not only to promote tourism, but JOTA/ JOTI also gave the scouts the opportunity to expand their networking, exchange badges and pictures with those they have contact with.

Another unique feature of the JOTI is that it allows scout members and their counterparts to give and receive certificates, while JOTA enables them to receive and collect station cards from various Amateur Radio from the Asia-Pacific Region. Thus expanding their contacts further.

During the event, the scouts were expected to contact some 1$ to 22 countries in the Asia Pacific Region out of 26 countries.

"Not all of the country can be contacted, as they would have some other difficulties such as the weather. When using the Amateur Radio." said Steven Chiaw, a Universiti Brunei Darussalam Rover Scout.

So far, the Rover Scouts were able to contact countries such as Malaysia, Bhutan, Bangladesh, Hong Kong, Singapore and Australia.

Scouting worldwide has a co-brotherhood system, if you're a scout, we don't care whether you have different languages, race or skin colour. all of us are the same." said Steven.
