Four Traditional Medicines Recalled

Bandar Seri Begawan - Four traditional medicines have been recalled by the Drug Control Authority in a neighbouring country after they were found to contain substances that might lead to harmful side effects, the Ministry of Health stated.

The general medicine Jinglida contains aminotadalafil, an undeclared Western drug ingredient used to treat erectile dysfunction and male impotency. The drug can interact with other medicines resulting in serious adverse effects such as the lowering of blood pressure if used together with some anti-hypertensive drugs.

Bodybeaus, a slimming product, was found to contain sibutramine which can cause symptoms of psychosis, hallucinations, confusion, anxiety as well as an increase in blood pressure and heart rate. Sibutramine is used as an appetite suppressant in the management of obesity and should only be used under proper medical supervision.

Meanwhile, Eng Leong Cordyceps, Chuanbei Plus Cough Pill 3.5gm was reported to contain diphenhydramine which may lead to dizziness, lowering of blood pressure,
confusion, in-coordination and drowsiness.

Loong Choo Brand Reh Bin Ho Herbal Tea contains paracetemol which is usually used to treat pain and fever. Long-term consumption of paracetemol may cause rashes, low blood pressure and blood disorders. Overdosage of the substance could lead to liver and kidney damage.

Importers of the products have been instructed to recall the affected products from the market, after the Department of Pharmaceutical Services' Pharmacy Enforcement Section encountered the sale of Jinglida and Body beaus in Brunei.

Following the report, all said products were no longer allowed to be imported and sold in the country. Anyone involved in the retailing of the products were reminded that it is an offence under the Poisons Act, where the penalty for such an offence, upon conviction, is a fine of $8,000 or jailed for six months. -- Courtesy of The Brunei Times
