Choose Tuition Service With Proper Teaching System, Parents Told
Bandar Seri Begawan - Parents should choose quality and reliable tuition services that provide a proper teaching system instead of making decisions based on price and student quantity, said a representative from an established tuition school yesterday.
Declining to be named, the representative from Hajah Fatimah Tutorial School said that the recent increase of private tutors and tuition schools have led to the lowering of fees which compromised the teaching process, making it inconsistent, incomprehensive and lacking in professionalism
She said that some tutors will stop providing their services near the end of the actual academic final year examination, sometimes even two months in advance.
"This is why we have students coming in now, at the last minute to seek for tuition but we cannot entertain them," she said.
She also spoke of how tuition should not be seen by parents as a method of replacing school education but as a means of facilitating children's educational development.
"The role of tuition is to complement the school's efforts to help achieve the government's vision of educating the population to a higher level," she said.
"Tuition can also assist children to grasp the needs of our ever-changing world as well as help fulfil the hopes and ambitions that parents have for their children," she added.
The main focus of tuition was to help weaker students move along and keep up with others, she said, adding that there is less focus on students' needs of students in school classes because there were too many students, each with their own calibre and capabilities.
"In tuition, the classes arc smaller and so we can single them out and work on their weaknesses," she explained.
A government school Science teacher who requested to be known only as Sarah, said that there were students joining in mid way every year because their parents were not satisfied with their previous tuition teachers.
The Secondary Three teacher, who provides private tuition services for her own pupils and those from other schools, agreed that tuition services should be judged by results and not popularity or pricing.
"Tuition is not cheap, so I advise all parents to discuss among their friends to see if anyone of them can suggest a good tuition teacher who is reliable and knows what he or she is doing," said Sarah, adding that parents, more often than not, will allow their children to pick their own tuition teachers which consequently lead them to joining their friends.
Sarah, however, said that regardless of how good tuition teachers are, students are still the main determinant of how well they do in their exams.
"We can give them the best tuition ever, accompanied by stacks of reference papers and this will still all be useless if the students themselves do not take it seriously and work hard," said Sarah.
