Record 34 People Falls Ill Of Swine Flu
Record 34 People Falls Ill Of Swine Flu
Bandar Seri Begawan - As 34 people, the most number so far, fell ill yesterday of Swine flu the total cases passed the 300 mark since the outbreak began here on June 20.
That perhaps kept Brunei's trend as having the highest percentage growth in A/H1N1 cases in the world in the past ten years.
There are 13 cases under treatment in the hospital.
The highest number of A/H1N1 cases in Brunei was on July 8 when there were 33 cases.
Meanwhile Health Ministry announced that the World Health Organization has informed countries that reporting of individual laboratory-confirmed cases of Influenza A H1N1 is no longer essential as a monitoring tool.
Thus the body no longer requires countries to submit the report and will no longer publish updates on the number of confirmed cases for all countries in their website.
Based on the new measures taken by the World Health Organization, the Ministry of Health will also standardized these measures by no longer publishing the number of new cases in Brunei in its press releases, as previously been practiced.
The Ministry of Health will however, continue to undertake measures to control the outbreak of Influenza A H1N1, as outlined in the Influenza Pandemic Preparedness Plan such as:
- Continue the surveillance of influenza-like illness in health centres.
- Limit the number of visitors visiting patients in the hospitals.
- Encourage social distancing that is advising the public to isolate themselves and to reduce social interactions if they have the symptoms of influenza.
- Promote personal hygiene and the surroundings to prevent the spread of influenza.
Patients who have mild form of the infection and are not at risk of developing severe complications are often allowed to be treated at home. A large proportion of close contacts who in general, do not have symptoms of the disease, will also be allowed to undergo home quarantine, if home circumstances are deemed suitable for quarantine purposes. The suitability for home treatment for patients and home quarantine for close contacts are assessed by the relevant departments, according to the current guidelines.
The Ministry of Health will, from time to time, provide updates on changes in the control measures undertaken.
For further information on Influenza A H1N1 situation in Brunei Darussalam, the public can go to the Ministry of Health's website: www.moh.gov.bn. The public can also contact Healthline 145 during office hours or 8220991 outside working hours for general enquiries on Influenza A H1N1.

Why are schools still opened? Especially to those under 12 years. You see, children under 12 years are not encourgaed to visit hospitals due to their low immunity to the virus. If this is so, why didn't they consider children under the age of 12 years are not encouraged to attend classes?
Perhaps MOE and MoH should consider on these matter. We parents may be too paranoid which we think we should. We could not take things too lightly. Children are innocent beings and they do not deserve to be ignored.
Kindies should stay closed until the situation is under control. Home studies should be encouraged and MOE should consider the September holidays to be used to conduct extra classes for students under 12 when the classes are closed. We still almost half of the classes empty either due to number of students falling sick and infected OR parents are still worried to send their kids to school.
I also agree to Cautious Citizen concerning the MOH measures not to publish and update the number of cases. The public need to be informed of the total number of cases so they will be more alert and be reminded of the existence of the fatal virus.
DOn't take things for granted please!!!!!!!

I wish to express my dissent with regards to the decision of MOH to not publish the daily number of new infections in its press releases. Having considered the attitude of the Bruneian people during the last few weeks since the outbreak, this decision is irrational and unjustified. Imagine that the Brunei people are not reminded daily of the numbers of infection which are increasing by the day, I kid you not when I say that more and more people will be complacent and will no longer exercise care and caution. This will result in more infections in the community. I am appalled that the MOH has made this decision just because WHO no longer requires country to report the number of infection and no longer publishes updates in its website saying that they are following this standard procedure! Indeed! Do you have to be told what to do before doing anything? And after our HM Titah, no less? Just because it is a standard procedure, do you have to follow it? Isnt a standard procedure usually just the minimum requirement? Isnt doing more better? I can understand why WHO does not require country to give daily updates, but dont you have responsibilty towards your own countrymen? Do you mean you only counted the numbers before this just to fulfill WHO's requirement? Is that too much to ask? Is counting numbers which is still in the hundreds too hard to do?
I URGE STRONGLY, NAY, I INSIST VEHEMENTLY that you still post this numbers daily, if not in your press release, at least in your website. Please do more rational thinking especially in the light of the fact that the night-market in Bandar for the Royal Birthday Celebration will still be carried out. When people are reminded of the risk daily, at least they will exercise self responsibilty and exercise caution. Otherwise, if there is more infection and god-forbid, another death, you have no one, MOH, but yourself to blame for having erred in your decision.
