Brunei, Sarawak Seek Closer Cooperation

Bandar Seri Begawan - Brunei and Sarawak are discussing on an agreement to set up a working committee to look into various areas of cooperation and identify projects that both nations could jointly coordinate.

The cooperation to be looked into includes the energy sector, specifically on hydroelectricity and industrial, agricultural and tourism sectors, according to a report by Borneo Post Sunday edition.

This was confirmed by Pehin Orang Kaya Pekerma Dewa Dato Seri Setia Lim Jock Seng, Minister of Foreign Affairs and Trade II who said that tourism and other industries would be among the projects on the agenda for discussion in future bilateral talks between Brunei and Sarawak.

The issue was discussed during a dinner reception hosted by Sarawak Second Minister of Planning and Resource Management Datuk Amar Awang Tengah Ali Hassan in honour of Pehin Lim' visit at Hilton Kuching on Friday, the report said.

Pehin Lim was in Kuching to brief Sarawak Chief Minister, Pehin Sri Abdul Taib Mahmud on the BIMP-EAGA meeting scheduled to be held on August 7- 8 in Brunei.

According to Datuk Amar Awang Tengah, Brunei is expected to receive 400 megawatts of electricity from Sarawak next year, following a memorandum of understanding (MoU) which the two countries signed last May. The electricity will be delivered in two stages. Brunei will initially receive 200MW from Bakun Hydroelectric Dam after its commissioning next year and followed by another 200MW in the second delivery from Limbang Hydroelectric Dam.

He said that under the MoU and within the six months of it's signing, Sarawak would also study the technical aspects such as infrastructure and methods of supplying the power.

Brunei's delegation also included Deputy Minister of Defence, Pehin Datu Singamanteri Kolonel (Rtd) Dato Seri Paduka Mohammad Yasmin Hj Umar and Jokhizwan Jaafar.

Why do we need the electricity? This is a burden to Brunei. Bad decision.
