Brunei Tops World Swine Flu Percentage Growth
Brunei Tops World Swine Flu Percentage Growth

Second Highest Per Population Density
Bandar Seri Begawan - Peter Osborn, a British statistics expert claims that Brunei had the highest percent growth in Influenza A/H1N1 cases in the world in the past ten days among nations reporting over 100 incidents of the disease so far. It had a record 547 percentage growth, Mr Osborn's statistics showed.
The country has also acquired the dubious distinction of being the second highest in the world for cases per 10,000 of the population.
Egypt had the lowest growth during the past ten days and Chile the highest per 10,000 population
The figures are contained in his website www.peterosborn.com which monitors the trend of the pandemic among nations.
However a Health Ministry press release said that another 16 people had fallen sick for the second day running bringing the total to 271 with the flu. The source of the latest cases is still under investigation.
So far there has been one death. A 12-year-old girl died on July 3 of A/H1N1. She also had advanced liver complications.
Meanwhile a further nine cases of the swine flu have recovered and been discharged from hospital, the ministry said.
As for the 120 cases that are still under treatment, 85 percent are continuing treatment at their homes and the rest at normal isolation wards at the hospitals.
The Ministry of Health continues to remind the public to practice good personal hygiene in order to control the spread of the disease through:
- Frequent hand washing using soap and water and drying hands using disposable napkins or electrical hand dryer.
- Use of disposable tissue paper containing alcohol or antimicrobial gel in the absence of a hand washing facility.
- Covering nose and mouth with tissue paper when coughing or sneezing and immediately throw the tissue paper away in the rubbish bin.
- Avoiding being with people who have symptoms of influenza.
- Avoiding going to crowded places.
The Ministry of Health also continued to remind the public that although Influenza A H1N1 infection has generally been reported as mild, it causes serious complications to pregnant mothers and patients with chronic diseases. Cooperation from the public, especially those visiting patients in the hospitals, is therefore sought to prevent the spread of the infection to the patients that they are visiting. The public are reminded to adhere to visiting regulations at all hospitals.
For general enquiries on Influenza A H1N1, the public can contact Healthline 145 during office hours or 8220991 after working hours.

Many countries are NOT even collecting statistics lately. Even most develop countries have STOPPED testing for H1N1. So, if they have stopped testing while Brunei is vigorously testing and diagnosing, doesn't it make sense that we will have the highest statistics anyway?
Please...... Borneo Bulletin!. You have done enough in encouraging panic. Why dont you do some balanced reporting?

4me... Brunei d 2nd DOESN'T MEAN that it had the highest percent growth in Influenza A/H1N1 cases in the world.
Q: Negara MANA yg memberikan kemudahan perubatan FREE???
A: Most public hospitals around the whole, Malaysia, Singapore, Australia, Canada, just to name a few.
I think u live in your very own tiny world, and that u cant accept the fact that your government is not doing enough to maintain the situation. DENIAL.

Just read all the comments and yes and no to some of the comments stated here.
Amrd: How do you know the people in other countries cannot afford to pay for the hospital fees and medication? Dont just say what you wish. You and me dont know that they can and cannot afford to pay for fees.Of course the person conducting the statistics has taken that into consideration. Traveller: I think they are not doing a good job at the entrance since some of my colleagues that have returned from studies abroad were just asked whether they are having flu or not.
Since they're not, they just let my colleagues go without stating that they have to be quarantine at home for a week.So much for the information and secondly, people here are still taking this as a joke. When they are supposed to stay at home when they're sick, we can still see them walking in crowded area.
Is it accurate: they stopped the testing because the virus are under control and the people are listening and following the do's and don't's and the statistics are getting too low to be recorded into the statistics.
Citi: If Travel agencies are prepared to return back their money then they will consider not to go abroad.
Ceh: if we have a tiny population, dont you think that we can easily contained the number of those infected and got the virus much lower than those countries with large population? Wake up, it is the people that just wont listen.

Dear Anonymous,
please read:-
http://sjsandteam.wordpress.com/2009/07/02/singapore-confirmed-82-new-cases-of-h1n1-flu-total-stands-at-783/
Besides several other developed countries such as Australia, US and Hong Kong,
Singapore MOH is going through a transition phase where those known to have mild symptoms are NOT tested, only severely ill or high risk patients will be tested for H1N1. However, those of us with family members working at the RIPAS H1N1 center know very well that RIPAS is vigourously testing even those with mild symptoms. Even some with no symptoms but are in close contact or very high risk are also tested. That is why we could be recording a higher statistic than other countries who have stepped done the intensity of testing.
Do not blame others for being in denial while you lack knowledge.

Yes, Brunei's growth rate for swine flu is rapidly increasing. But this doesnt necessarily mean that we are faring any worse than the other countries. This is because Brunei reports every single case of swine flu. Take for example UK and some parts of the US, they have stopped reporting mild swine flu cases completely and only officially reports severe cases with underlying health complications. See: http://www.guardian.co.uk/worl...government and http://www.ktka.com/news/2009/...flu_cases/
The UK has even told suspected flu cases not to bother seeing the doctor...they would just ask anyone with symptoms to rest at home and take "over the counter medicines" e.g. antivirals and paracetamol. Only if the situation persists should you go and see the doctor. See: http://www.nhs.uk/news/2009/04...ersion.pdf
And to those folks out there who think Bruneians just dont listen to precautionary advice in comparison to other countries, then think again...it's summertime in Europe and the West, think of how many concerts are ongoing right now in that part of the world; none of them were cancelled.
If even that's hard to imagine, then just think of what happened recently: Michael Jackson's memorial, it wasn't cancelled for swine flu; they didnt even bother wearing facemasks.
And to the "reporters" please understand the news content and the virus properly before jumping and causing panic, you should be checking why the nnumbers are so and so before just copying and pasting from peterosborn. It seems that BT and Brudirect are starting to turn into a tabloid magazine...not just with the swine flu coverage but also with other "news" like the Prince Jefri article and a few others before that.

Now the negative: the outbreak and the high percentage reported corresponded to a period in Brunei where her wayfaring population had just returned back from overseas (school break from universities / overseas vacation etc). Contact with this number of infected population then led to other infections.
This only shows that Brunei is a more sociable community, with a large extended family with frequent interaction.

and the swine flu isn't that bad really. most cases of death are due to existing co-morbidities that would render the patient more likely to succumb. just like how the immunocompromised are more likely to die of pneumonia. and the idea is that it usually hits the younger population. swine flu has happened before. (plus it's not just from 'pigs' as it's aptly be named by the media. it's a variant mix of bird/pig flu). those older than 40 would've most likely been exposed before and therefore less likely to be affected.
the main feature of prevention is really just to practise good self hygiene. in this at least the article is right to remind the reader to wash their hands regularly.
and there's no point dissing each other eh. gotta just get on with it and deal with the spread.
