Back To School? - Not The Case For All It Seems

Bandar Seri Begawan - It was not your typical scene at schools yesterday where a recorded drop in student attendance was noted amid the current swine flu fears.

It is evident that some parents are still hesitant to send their children back to school, which re-opened yesterday following a one-week extension to the mid-year term break.

Kuala Belait Chung Hua Middle School Principal Hong Geok Cheng said the school recorded only 67.8% attendance on the first day.

"Only 39.7% of pre-schoolers turned up for classes, while 24 students who had just returned form overseas vacations were sent home for self-quarantine.

"The rapid spread of the Influenza A (HIN1) virus has become a growing concern among parents and as a result, most of the students, particularly Kindergarten students, did not turn up for classes today," she added.

Parents/guardians have been advised to refrain from sending their children to school should they show signs or symptoms of Influenza A (HINI).

Schools are also stepping up precautions to reduce the risk of spreading the HINI.

Before entering the school grounds, both parents and students are subjected to temperature checks and are required to disinfect their hands with the liquid provided.

Additionally, schools are also placing great emphasis on students washing their hands with the provided soap and warm water to kill any bacteria. -- Courtesy of Borneo Bulletin
