Heroin: Life Term For Brunei Woman

Bandar Seri Begawan - The 26-year-old Bruneian woman arrested in China for smuggling 894.05 grammes of heroin has been sentenced to life imprisonment.

Sentenced by Shanghai No 1 Intermediate People's Court, China on June 1, the sentence will be carried out in China, according to a press statement by the Narcotics Control Bureau (NCB) yesterday.

The woman, who was caught on January 11, was detained by Shanghai's Anti-Smuggling Bureau during her arrival at Pudong International Airport in Shanghai on flight number MH388 from Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia.

She was found to be in possession of heroin hidden in the lining of her luggage.

Meanwhile, another Bruneian male has been arrested by Chinese authorities on June 23 for trying to smuggle 995.72 grammes of heroin into the country.

The 29-year-old man was arrested about 3pm by the Anti-Smuggling Bureau, Tianjin Customs, China upon his arrival at Binhai International Airport on flight D72612 from Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia.

The same method was used by the smugglers. The man is believed to be the latest victim of an international drug syndicate.

The man is now being held for further questioning at the Tianjin First Detention House Of Tianjin Municipal Public Security Bureau, China.

The smuggling activity is believed to be the latest modus operandi of an international African drug syndicate which operates through Internet chatting sites and meets up in Malaysia.

Two other drug smuggling cases involving Bruneians namely in Santiago, Chile and Sydney, Australia are still under investigation.

In view of the recent development of the ongoing cases, the NCB reminded the public, especially parents of unsuspecting children to he aware of the situation and take notice of their activities.

People who were approached by strangers over the Internet with dubious but attractive promises were advised to lodge reports. The numbers to call are 2448877 during office hours and 8777444 after office hours.
