Queries On Schools Re-Opening Monday
Bandar Seri Begawan - Once again several concerned parents spoke to the Weekend Bulletin Hotline yesterday inquiring if the authorities will consider extending the schools re-opening in view of the current Influenza A (H1N1) situation in the country. The schools re-opening date was extended by another week by the relevant Ministries on Monday and is now scheduled for Monday July 6, 2009.
One of the callers wished that the authorities concerned will consider a further extension until the situation stabilises especially due to heightened awareness following the first fatality reported on Thursday.
An informed source at the Ministry of Education said there has been no change in the scheduled school-reopening on Monday.
However depending on any further advice from the Ministry of Health of any change, the public will be kept informed.
Meanwhile another parent said that an increased number of Brunei students studying overseas are expected to return home during the current summer holidays in UK. -- Courtesy of Borneo Bulletin

I know education is extremely important but you should think about our son and daughter. I don't want to lose them easily to h1n1. They are too young! The eldest 16 years old, do you think it's easy to raise a child? He's now 16 and i'm not going to lose a hard-raised son. I caged them in my house for a week. Giving all their needs for that week, care them...Etc. Educated with short life is really really useless.

we need more holidays. this case is serious. you don't want to let this virus spread in the school and wait for the holidays to be extended until the no. of the cases increases to God knows how much! i don't want to be sick when i'm having my exam at the end of the year. plus, i don't think that the mask will help to reduce the no. of the cases. what we need to do know is maybe read Yassin on the first day of school. or do a Sembahyang Hajat together. i know it'd be crowded. but at least we're trying to get some help from Allah SWT. so please MOH, close the schools. what's the point of studying if you're sick? this virus spreads very fast. and our country is not safe. eh, as a matter of fact, the whole nation is not safe!

Are we really concerned???, Low-rated comment [Show]
written by MJ , July 04, 2009
It's funny that most parents and guardians of students are requesting the relevant Ministries to extend the school holiday when most of these parents and guardians do not heed the Ministry of Health (MOH) advice i.e "students ARE REQUIRED to stay at home" during the extended school holiday.
Everywhere I go; be it the malls, supermarkets, cinemas are fill with youngsters & almost all not wearing masks. What's the point of giving the extended holiday when students are seen everywhere in crowded places? The sad thing is that most of these youngsters are with their parents or guardians. To all, please understand the main reason why the Ministries are extending the school holiday.
If the parents/guardians are really concern, they will not do what they have done during this pandemic crisis.
My question is: Do the parents and the whole of Brunei are really concern?
Action speaks louder than words.

For the students' safety, extending holiday is the best way for the students to avoid crowded places. Schools are the most crowded places. Please. For the students' health. Brunei can close the cinema in order to prevent the students from having the disease.

the H1N1 flu getting more and more each day, make us worry. extending the school holiday means we can do more preventations, we can keep our self safe from the flu, but people still went to shopping complex especially youngster. its our choice actually, if we chose to go out, we take our own risk, we stay at home, much safer. and students have less time to study. if the MOE and MOH wants to extend the school holiday, why not during December, let the students go to school for two weeks then have their holidays.
re-opening the school, means, students are open to the flu, can get the flu much easier, studies go as usual.

This flu is not a child's play, you people would't know what will happen after a month or any. As what we heard from other country, many people died of this disease. stop being a complete moron, who knows that people treated is just lucky. I personally think health comes first than education as dead people with alot of education is useless. They do not have a second chance on earth! May Allah protect us.

please extend the holiday, we are too scared to even go out for shopping or anything, what more going to school? the place will be crowded, especially during assembly and all. this is so scary, i don't mind if they're going to take the 3rd term or 4th term away to replace this holiday, as long as we all are safe from this virus. seriously even if you wanna take half of raya holiday, i don't mind, i know education is quite important, i am pursuing university soon, and i do wanna have good salary, and i do wanna study, this is not due to laziness, but due to the awareness of this deadly disease. MASKS ARE NOT ENOUGH to prevent this virus, please.

I would just like to comment on the articles about the mall and supermarkets etc.... I was at the Mall on Thursday evening. It was busy. However, not as busy as usual.Did anyone go to Gadong this afternoon? I did and got a park straight away outside the Mall. Unbelievale! It was deserted compared to a usual Saturday. Think this says it all. Finally people are taking this seriously. Let's hold off schools reopening. Please.

if moe is going to keep extending our holiday. When are we going to have our qualifying exam?? or even PMB? I'm sick and tired of holidays. i know you would say it's better if they extend it, but try to look at what's happening. is the number of cases decreasing? no. the reason why moe extended the holiday in the first place is to let the children or teenagers stay and REST at home. not go to the mall, watch movies , hang out with friends. but as you can see. extending the holidays DOESN'T help.

I assume a lot of people would want the ministry to extend the school holidays for another week and I personally think this is a good idea. Considering the fact that students temp. need to be checked everyday before they go into the school, I'm sure this would be a hassle and time consuming. Then again, letting the students wait in line with their friends (who maybe already been affected) can affect other students. Until this blows off, I think it's best to let the students stay in their homes for the time being.......
I'm sure parents would want to prevent their loved-ones from getting infected and then again the MOH stated that they're out of vaccine.... So,the ministry should think about this cuz if school reopens, im sure there would be a massive increase in the number of people infected... which will not help to reduce the number of cases of H1N1.......
I know that education is important for the students....but its useless for them to study if they're not healthy.I was once a student and i know how it feels like being unhealthy when ur trying to concentrate on ur studies....it is very difficult!
For parents, they should advise their children not to go to crowded places....the children should stay in their houses to prevent themselves from getting infected(as stated above, students have been roaming around at the mall,do you think the ministry would want to extend their holidays?)
If the MOH re-opens schools on monday...please think, would that be SAFER? would that REDUCE the number of people infected? would that CURE the H1N1? or ...........
Would it increase the chances for the flu to MUTATE to a SEVER and FATAL infections?(as a virologist from Hong-kong stated that the H1N1 is a very UNSTABLE virus which can mutate easily and from that, its deadly).... rapidly increase the number of infected?..and increase the numbers of lives at risk?... so please...think about it...1 death is enough

Please have mercy upon us, we, the students ourselves think that MOE should extend the holiday. WE do not want to get infected by the H1N1 virus then suddenly the enforcers would tell us that we are not allowed to be in contact with others. What about our exam?our future? Wouldnt it be a total loss for us? please, we are begging you, MOE as the enforces, please, have mercy upon us.

MOH is afraid the virus mutate to a more dangerous and serious strain in the news and it will eventually be so if more and more people get infected.
If MOE think now the virus is still mild and wish to start school next week go ahead as i am not letting my son attending school eventhough his exam is coming.
I am sure the number of infection would exponentially rise to over 200 when school opens. It does not matter if parents bring their children to shopping as the distance between people is still not that close but in school everyone is just a mere few inches from each other.
I urge MOE to close schools until the infection stabilises plan on how to accomodate those who will have their exams in terms of extention or extra classes when the schools finally open. It is better than let it open then close when the infection rises and the decision maker you will be much cursed.
Do consider. Thank you very much.

Some people said that holiday is useless. Some people still go out jalan jalan, but no. Not all of us are like that. The people who saw many people at the mall are the one that go out. Why? Because they went to the mall. If they didn't go there how did they know. We students did stay at home. So please extend the holiday.

The point is whether our children going to school is it safety or not. What if they caught H1N1 in school, Then how should we do and cure them. Actually open school is good, IF ITS SAFETY. Children stay at home watch too much movie and doing nothing. Wasting their precious time. Still! I wonder is it Safety or Not.

Salam~ Regarding on this issue, for me I don't mind whether going to school or staying at home. I believe MOE and MOH will do the right decisions for us all. Both health and education are important. But if in case, students have to extend another holidays, I really think public places such as The Mall should restrict their security. I went to The Mall last night with my family and found out lots of teenagers hang out there. C'mon parents, watch your child! Don't just send them to the Mall "lepak-ing", it's better to just stay at home at this moment. While to those students who concern about their educations including me
How about E-learning? We still can learn through online. It's better to learn through online than just wasting your times checking facebook, tagged, blogs, etc. Well, that's all. God bless Brunei, amin~

This is the 3rd time I write in this column and my article never get publish. If you Mr Admin still do not publish this article of mine I will go straight to your office to seek for an explanation.
My concern is the younger students in year 1 and 2, they will never keep mask on, they will never wash their hands before and after unless they are reminded so. So do you think the teachers can make sure that they attend to all their students to make sure they do what they suppose to do to maintain their students personal hygene. What happens when its recess time for snacks? Further more younger students at higher risk and weaker immune system.
MOE pls do consider closing the school till the condition is stable and situation is safe. Going to shopping parents still can assure they and their children are kept a distance from other shoppers and wear a mask, in school every students are only inches away from each other. You are looking for a huge number of infection to come if school is open at this time of high risk period. Pls consider.

Its a good reflection. Welldone guys. And actually i am nervous to come to school this Monday..but bertawakkal tah saja, pikirkan tah saja macamana perasaan nurse and doctor yang bertugas totally arah pusat penempatan penghidap H1N1..Wish u all luck, Mudahan Allah Taala Melindungi Kitani semua Aminn..dan menghilangkan wabak ani dari semakin menular di Negara Kitani Ani..

I commend Brunei for reporting the cases evryday for the public to know. Since Day 1 , they have been transparent about the number of cases. They have been working seriously to contain the virus, they are even exposed to the flu virus just to protect the country. It;s about time that we appreciate their hardwork and sacrifices. They have the data, the expertise about the case and I hope that they can come up with decision for the safety and welfare of everyone. to all , be safe and healthy.

Its better didn't want to extend holiday cause MOE and MOH have a reasons why school holiday didn't extend?
1.Nowadays,since the extending of holiday, many teenagers going to mall and public places.they don't care bout the precautions.
2.Teenager are over social that make more public places full of teenage.
3.PMB and O'Level qualifying are really close. So the public don't want their children to success.
4.To get rid of this,we work together as the Bruneians,to fight this virus with the help of MOH.
