Limbang Imam In A Knot Over Illegal Fishing

Bandar Seri Begawan - A Malaysian imam, who fished in Brunei waters without a valid licence, was fined $800 or in default one-month imprisonment by the Bandar Seri Begawan Magistrate's Court yesterday.

Mohd Daud bin Sidop, a fisherman and also an imam in Surau Kampong Limpaku Pinang, Limbang, Malaysia was caught fishing in Sungai Menunggol Taut while using fishing nets a week ago, which is an offence punishable under Section 11(1) of the Fisheries Act (Cap 61).

The court was told that the defendant went to the area and caught about 4.2 kilogrammes of Penaeus Indicus, known locally as ‘Udang Putih'.

Marine Police spotted the defendant and approached his boat.

According to the Deputy Public Prosecutor, Marine Police found the ‘Udang Putih' in his possession and found out that the defendant did not possess a licence to fish in Brunei waters.  -- Courtesy of Borneo Bulletin
