Gurkhas To Stay On In Seria For Five More Years

The Right Honourable Gordon Brown (R), MP Prime Minister of the United Kingdom of Great Britain and Northern Ireland, and His Majesty Sultan Haji Hassanal Bolkiah Mu'izzaddin Waddaulah, the Sultan and Yang Di-Pertuan of Brunei Darussalam.

Bandar Seri Begawan - His Majesty the Sultan met the British Prime Minister, Mr Gordon Brown, in London on Tuesday at 10 Downing Street, and decided that the British Gurkhas in Seria will stay on for another five years.

The Brunei Army and the British Gurkhas are also to cooperate more, it was decided.

During the meeting, His Majesty and Gordon Brown discussed ways to strengthen further the relation and cooperation between Brunei and the UK, and exchanged views on regional and international matters of interest, officials said

Following this, His Majesty signed the Exchange of Notes between Brunei and the British Government which provided the British Gurkha Brigade currently stationed in oil town Seria to stay on for another five years from September 29.

An official said that both Governments acknowledged the longstanding defence relationship and intended to further strengthen these ties through fostering cooperation between the Royal Brunei Armed Forces and the British Gurkha Brigade.

These included areas of mutual interest such as training, disaster and relief operations, and the sharing of professional expertise, including security, on an equitable, and mutually advantageous basis,

Towards this end, a Brunei Darussalam-UK Garrison Defence Committee would be established to implement the agreement. -- Courtesy of Borneo Bulletin
