JPKE To Conduct Major Biz Survey From June 15

Hj Zulkifli. - JASON LEONG
Bandar Seri Begawan - The government of His Majesty the Sultan and Yang DiPertuan of Brunei Darussalam through the Department of Economic Planning and Development (JPKE) is currently implementing a project on the `construction of an input-output table for Brunei'.
The project is to improve the data situation for the national accounts, particularly for the compilation of gross domestic product (GDP); to provide the basis for an analysis of inter-industry linkages and to lay the foundation for future economic modelling and impact analysis of policies for the economy of Brunei.
As part of the project activities, JPKE will be conducting the economic input-output survey 2009 from June 15. The survey covers all medium and large and a selection of small businesses to represent each type of business activities.
This was highlighted by Hj Zulkifli bin Panglima Asgar Dato Paduka Hj Abdullah, Director for Administration and ICT at JPKE.
On the whole, there are about 3,600 companies in Brunei of which 90 per cent are small businesses while the remaining 10 per cent are medium and large businesses employing 10-99 employees and over 100 employees respectively. About 1,300 large, medium and small companies are expected to be included in the survey.
These businesses are also participating in the quarterly survey of businesses regularly conducted by JPKE each quarter of every year. The economic input-output survey 2009 will be collecting information for the year 2007.
The data required include type of business, number of employees, revenue and expenditure, revenue for primary and secondary activities, revenue by origin, expenditure for materials, expenditure for services and compensation to employees.
Though JPKE has conducted various censuses and surveys in the past, no specific information exists so far on detailed cost and expenditure of businesses, which can be used for the compilation of input-output tables.
Hence, the objective of the economic input-output survey 2009 is to collect the missing data for the country's economy and to secure a quality and positive outcome of the input-output table project.
The economic input-output survey 2009 is conducted under the Statistics Act, Chapter 81 of the laws of Brunei Darussalam. All the information given will be treated as confidential and will be used for statistical purposes only. Information relating to any individual company or business wills not he disclosed under any circumstances.
The economic input-output survey 2009 questionnaires and the accompanying manual for completing the questionnaire will be distributed to businesses by mail starting from June 15. The closing date for returning the completed questionnaires to JPKE is July 23, 2009 biz survey from June 15.
Businesses which have not received the questionnaire or which require further information or assistance in completing the questionnaire may contact JPKE at 2230251 or e-mail at This e-mail address is being protected from spambots. You need JavaScript enabled to view it . Both the questionnaire and the manual can also be downloaded from JPKE's website at www.depd.gov.bn.
The full support and cooperation from all selected businesses in providing accurate and timely information is appreciated as it will be vital to the success of the survey. -- Courtesy of Borneo Bulletin
