Kuala belait - Several people are still affected by the flood which struck several areas in the nation including the remote areas of Labi in Belait. District. The flooding which occurred sometime between January and February this year almost entirely cut telephone communication in the area, as 96 villagers in Sukang, Buau, Melilas and Bang Taong are still without proper telephone access

Until maintenance works are carried out to restore the telephone cable, TelBru is temporarily loaning satellite phones to Penghulu, village heads, principals, Police Station and leaders in the affected areas.

TelBru Belait Assistant District Manager, Pg Hjh Zubaidah Pg Hj Abas, said the satellite phones will enable villagers to place emergency calls until communication has been restored.

Eight satellite phones were presented yesterday morning to the leaders at the Belait District Office. The satellite phones will be allocated to homes of the village heads, police station and schools for villagers to make telephone calls.

Pg Hjh Zubaidah, when presenting a briefing on proper use of the satellite phones, urged leaders to monitor the usage as the satellite phones allow users to place unlimited calls with specified credit.

On Feb 26 this year, TelBru also presented 16 sets of b.mobile phones with $20 credit to affected villagers in Mukim Labi.

TelBru has recorded a total of 318 users in the isolated villages of Mukim Labi, Mukim Bukit Sawat and Mukim Sukang. -- Courtesy of Borneo Bulletin
