UBD Degree Programme

I'm currently studying in UBD under a secondary level teaching program and I'd like to comment on your post.

First of all, are/were you really a UBD student? Because as a UBD student under SHBIE, I don't find my major and minor courses relevant to what I'm going to teach in school.

I spent about 3 years studying those courses and only about 1 year in SHBIE taking courses related to teaching, like psychology of teaching, sociology of school and methods of teaching my major/minor subjects etc. Those are the same courses taken by the post-graduate (PGCE) students during their 1 year period in UBD. Even as a SHBIE student, our content courses (major and minor) are beyond school syllabus. None of what we're studying now will be taught in school when we graduate later. That's just the same with other graduates who took degrees in different fields! Only that 1 year courses in SHBIE are relevant!

In my opinion, it really does not matter what kind of degree you have as long as you undergo that 1 year SHBIE course in UBD if you want to become a teacher.

And as long as the degree program have something to do with what you're teaching. For example for a degree in business/marketing, they can teach business or economics maybe, for those with a degree in engineering they may teach Physics or Mathematics. Even a medical student can teach biology in school if they want.

Because for them to even be eligible for those degree programs, they have to obtain a good A level result for the subject related to that degree in the first place. And if they have good A level result in those subjects then they are knowledgeable enough to be teaching those subjects in school!

The degree courses that they (the non edu degree holders) took were to make them 'better equipped' in some specific field. But we (the SHBIEs) study a wider range of areas (not specific). For example as a Math major, we study bits and pieces of Maths studied by different degree programs (i.e. engineering, computer science etc etc).

The difference is just while we study many Maths topics of different areas, they study a specific one and go deeper into it. But the bottom line is, we both (the SHBIEs and non SHBIEs) have the same knowledge that enables us to teach secondary school topics.

Regardless of whatever degree we study in UNI, they all serve the same purpose when it comes to teaching. They solidify what we learn in school and make us more knowledgeable in that area. That 1 year in SHBIE taught us how to handle students and how to deliver our knowledge to them. You can't blame them for changing their career path after them graduating and 'taking over your job'.

Because whether you like it or not, they also have the proper KNOWLEDGE to teach. I even know quite a few B.Sc Education graduates who went into finance and even engineering after they graduated. Most degree programs actually have similar contents; it's just the core that is different. It's a good thing UBD is now introducing the Generation Next degrees. Hopefully people won't tied down to a particular degree for a specific job anymore.

I have no idea what he/she is complaining about. It seems to me that he/she is not happy to gain more knowledge than required. Being in the field of education requires one to pursue wider knowledge. I am very sure that the courses provided by UBD have relevance to your education degree. In addition to that, being an educator does not just limit yourself to your academic field, but further acquire other knowledge interests to satisfy your future students. Degree programmes are also designed to help individual to be independent; drive commitments and determination. Multi-discipline allows you to think criticially and outside the box. If you are truly aspired to be future educator, then try to find sense in what you are learning smilies/smiley.gif Good luck UBD

dear proud to be UBDian too, this is meant for Brudirect HYS in response to a post (Titled: Mau tau kenapa banyak complain pasal guru?) but somehow the postmaster changed my title to a more formal one. Read that and you'll understand. I'm NOT COMPLAINING AT ALL. Its a reply to a complaint!
