This is in response to the letters
"Parents complain against nagging teachers" by 'Disappointed

in the manner described towards their students.
With regard to the claims made by
'New Age Mom', the Ministry of Education advises the writer, for
further action, to refer the matter directly to:

Institutions and
Teachers Private Education Section,

| Smelly puddle in
staff room no more
In response to "Fuming over smelly
puddle in staff room" written by 'Brownei_in_Brunei' in the Borneo
Bulletin of 20th April 2005, the Department of Planning and Estate
Management, Ministry of Education, would like to state that efforts
have been made to resolve the problem concerned.
All school administrators are aware
that problems related to school building maintenance are to be
reported to the Department of Planning and Estate Management, Ministry
of Education, Old Airport Road, Berakas BB3510.
However, repairs and maintenance,
depending on the seriousness of the problem, need to go through
certain procedures, which take time to carry out. In the case
concerned, the problem was resolved in just over two weeks from the
date the complaint was made by the school itself.

| Dim sum with toxic
scare?
My family and I are dim sum lovers
but recently we had a change of taste.
We learned from a famous dim sum
kitchen staff who told us why his dim sum tasted so good. It's simply
because they add in a type of ingredient to make the dim sum taste
nicer.
To my horror I wondered how can this
be happening here in Brunei as this ingredient is banned in food
because it is considered a slow poison that can cause cancer.
I'm seeking the help of health
authorities to check on this dim sum stall inside a food court in the
capital where a lot of people go to, as this unhealthy dim sum could
kill us all one day.

Would industrial
projects make Brunei less healthy to live in?
Despite growing urbanisation
and the ensuing destruction of nature, Brunei is still a natural jewel
and, unlike other countries in the region, the population continues to
enjoy relatively unpolluted air and uncontaminated rivers and sea.
However, it is apparent that the country is currently contemplating on
embarking on industrial projects, which could ruin Brunei's natural
heritage and make it a far less healthy place to live.
Have the environmental and human health implications of such ventures
been thoroughly explored?

Coward on wings
I'm writing in to express my
concerns about a motorist who sped away at high speed along the little
road just in front of my house in Belait District.
The reckless driver who ran over my 3-month old pet around 5am this
morning not only did not have the courtesy to come forward to inform
us what happened but also committed the crime of speeding on a small
road (it's not a racing track you were driving on!). It was also
highly irresponsible to speed away like a coward after hitting my
pure-bred pet.
Some of us managed to spot this car but I bet the driver has no
remorse at all for the act.

Discriminating
against foreigners isn't a healthy solution
Recently, I overheard a local
voicing dissatisfaction as to why some government posts were given to
foreigners. (This included foreigners who were PRs but weren't local
Bruneians.)
I would like to voice my opinion here. I have friends who are locals,
expatriates, PRs as well as foreigners.
All of us have equal rights to apply for a job accordingly to our
qualifications.
And in most cases, the results of the interview may not be decided by
just one person.
Some PRs are born and brought up locally too and some are married to
local Bruneians.
Verbal discrimination against foreigners isn't a healthy solution.
We should work together as one to build up a nation.
Please take a good look at our neighbouring countries.
They have many expatriates, foreigners and locals working together
hand in hand. All of us deserve equal opportunities.
Furthermore, Brunei also encourages locals to work abroad. I myself
would feel for those who are working abroad or the foreigners who work
here in Brunei with or without their families.

Hoping to see more
pretty faces on board
I'm a frequent user of Royal
Brunei Airlines. I normally fly quite frequently each month and I love
flying with RBA.
The crew on board is doing their work well and the cabin crew serves
us with a smile.
I'm very satisfied with the way the cabin crew treats passengers on
board. They are very friendly.
The reason why I'm writing this email is to ask why can't RBA recruit
some more pretty stewardesses?
I hope RBA will be strict when recruiting people. With that I hope to
see more pretty faces on board.

MoE says no problems
have been encountered in the registration of private schools
This is in response to "Need
some help to get our tuition school going" by 'Concerned Entrepreneur'
published on the 4th May 2005.
Guidelines in the establishment of private schools have well been
introduced since early 1990s. These guidelines are continuously
updated from time to time.
In the process of registering private schools, applicants are required
to follow specific rules and regulations as stated in the "Education
Order 2003", Part VI, section (61) and (66).
The Private Education Section would like to inform that based on
record; no problems have been encountered in the registration of
private schools.
Applicants who are sincerely interested will fulfill the registration
requirements with adequate knowledge both in the field of education
and management.
