A leading authority on Brunei constitution
By Assoc. Professor Dr Haji B. A. Hussainmiya, Department of History, Universiti Brunei Darussalam

The revived Legislative Council is having its inaugural sessions today. In conjunction with this landmark event the Weekend Borneo Bulletin has invited Associate Professor Dr Haji B.A. Hussainmiya (photo) of UBD to write a new series on the workings of the Brunei State Council (1907-59) from which the present Legislative Council has evolved.

His books including "Sultan Omar Ali Saifuddien III and Britain; The Making of Brunei Darussalam", Oxford University Press, 1995, and "The Brunei Constitution: An Inside History, Brunei Press, 2000" have become standard reference works for those who want to study about constitutional developments in the pre- Sultan Haji Hassanal Bolkiah period.

Recently in 2002 "The Journal of South East Asian Studies" published by the National University of Singapore carried Dr Hussainmiya's article titled "Manufacturing Consensus: Role of the Brunei State Council (1907-59) which is the first detailed study of the Council. The author is one of the few scholars who have had access to the Council Minutes preserved in the Brunei National Archives, and in this series he is going to share with the Borneo Bulletin readers his findings on the fascinating proceedings of the Council.
