Brunei
does not practise racism!:
I am a local born Bruneian and very happy to be that. I live with
my surrounding neighbours made up of Chinese, Malays, Ibans,
Expats of different nationalities. For the last 30 years I have
not seen any practise of racism or sorts of any kind. Every body
was given a full respect of whatever races they are made up of and
whatever their religion. And we enjoy this to this date. Brunei is
a Malay, Islamic country and everybody respects that. For those
non local citizens, red I/C or PR holder they should be very
thankful to the Brunei Government for allowing them to stay, work
and set up their businesses in Negara Brunei Darussalam with no
government taxes. The B$100 you earn it goes straight into your
pocket without any cut. All the Immigration laws are set up
by our government to protect the interest of our future. "We
don't want to be a trader in our very own country". We
Bruneians should run our own country and we are fortunate that we
are not under the so called COMMONWEALTH RULE. So if anybody is
not happy how we run our government you are very much welcome to
"take a hike" and go to your so called commonwealth
countries where most people care to go such as Canada, Australia,
New Zealand or anywhere else in the Commonwealth.
If you have the experience of staying in Australia, New Zealand or
Germany it really sucks with their racist attitude towards the
Asians. For just driving on the wrong side of the road by mistake,
or being slow on the green light and for being Asian you will have
to be prepared with a big smile for their lovely greetings saying
"F*** OFF" you Chinaman! And this is the beautiful
country and friendly people that you call COMMONWEALTH where
racism does not exist. I have never been greeted with such words
in my lovely Brunei road and towns. Please do your home work on
racism then you will highly appreciate living in Brunei after all.

future use. MaharajaLela Mahara@yahoo.com

Proud
to be Bruneian and I am still Chinese by race:
My thanks to the two local papers for changing the tone of your
language. Now you are more readable and do not sound, what I
might term 'racist' anymore. I hope you stay that way.
And to Zyph, don't you get the point? Our people listen and
respond by doing the right thing. And Zyph, please allow me
to say something - gone are the days when people like yourself use
their mouth to utter, "anak cina, anak cina... behapa ia kah,
disini?...macam tah negeri nya?" For more than 20 years, I
have to tolerate this kind of attitude. Well, let me add this -
Brunei is my negeri. NOTHING and NO ONE can change that!! WingChye

To Conquer - Confused-Weng Chye:
What Commonwealth rules are you talking about? You yourself are a
RACIST. Why are you only talking about CHINESE with Pink IC, what
about the Brunei Malays, the Ibans, the Eurasians, the Indians
etc? No matter where you go if you are a Chinese you are still a
Chinese. You go to US, you are an American Chinese (at best). You
go to England will they call you ENGLISH? Go to Wales will they
call you a Welsh? You see a BRUNEI CITIZEN is called a BRUNEIAN, a
SINGAPORE CITIZEN is called a SINGAPOREAN. However they have their
own ethnic background, therefore they are called eg a SINGAPOREAN
INDIAN OR SINGAPOREAN MALAY or a BRUNEIAN MALAY. So don't you dare
to raise the racial issue in Brunei and try to disrupt the peace
and tranquillity of the country? If you can't accept what you are,
blame it on your parents or ancestors who migrated into this
country. Hey by the way, CONQUER, what is your
comment on the Australian action not accepting the refugees - mind
you Australia is a member of the UN and the British Commonwealth! Zyphr

Why
/ Chris:
No! It doesn't look like it is between the Afghans and the
Americans now. It is more like between the Americans and the
Muslims. It was not even between US & bin Laden, it should be
between Moosad / Israel and the US + the rest of the world. From
your name I presume you must be a Westerner, a typical Westerner.
You underestimated the intelligence of the Asians / the
Indonesians. They did not demonstrate 'blindly', they know what
they are doing. It is the Westerners and the Americans who are
blinded by the Moosad, Jews, Israelis. Do you think that the so
called hijackers / terrorists being able to carry out such attack
on the other hand were so stupid as to leave the easy trails -
leaving letters, manuals, hired cars, taking luggage to the
airport & left them there and all those stupid trails? For
survival and existence on this earth the Jews would do anything.
Why did the Germans butcher them? The Jews are the enemies of the
Muslims. And now also of the Americans, and in fact of the world,
if Allah show them the light of the truth. Zyphr

Pensioners:
I watched the Hari Perkhidmatan day celebration at ICC this
morning and saw His Royal Highness Crown Prince giving the
pensioners certificates. I am wondering why we cannot use some of
the retired government officers who have so much knowledge and
experience? May be we can use them to lecture UBD students or
young government officers. May be they can be special advisers to
the ministers or even more? There were some very good retired
officers just now who can be used to help educate us. But instead
they are retiring and some people who should be retired a long
time already are still sitting on the main platform in ICC and
watching good people being dismissed from our government and from
being used. Youngster 29.09.2001

Industrial:
Simple to make industrial entrepreneurship a success even with
your choosy badly educated big-pay-thinking and poorly prepared
unemployed persons.
If they know how to manufacture or fabricate products like a
German factory worker or the Japanese, they will do so since a
person who knows how to do a certain thing will likely find it
easy to make a living with it.
Start a state owned industry to turn these persons into an
experienced workers and when they go on their own, presto! Full
employment.
They will be satisfied in their own business producing export
quality goods earn big money and skilled with real work
qualifications.
Almost like they left Toyota factory or Mercedes factory or
aircraft factory to come and work in Brunei.
Sure to be a success with proper knowhow.
If they depend on local workshop, only know how to fix car in
primitive way and use simple machine. Local experience is too
lousy to make good workers for industrial activities. 29.09.2001 Meng

Why?:
I believe in all religions and they aim for peace for mankind, but
why is this Holy War declared against Americans if they attack
Afghanistan? I wonder is this what they teach in any
religion....of maybe some of the leaders have misused
religion....and the Indonesians have nothing to do with this
matter....because it is between the Afghans and the Americans...I
wander if these 1000 Indonesians know what is happening
politically between the Afghans and the Americans? If they do
not...it is sad that people follow blindly, and it is a very
serious thing because they seem to fight without reason..... chris

Race:
I think to be labelled with a "race" is perfectly fine.
We have to be proud to belong to whatever our culture we have
inherited. Malays, Chinese, Indians have their own special
culture and traditions. For example, African-Americans are
proud to be both Africans (as a race) and Americans (as a
nationality). However, I do not agree that in our official forms
we have to put ‘race’ as a requirement. What difference
does my race make when I apply for a passport or IC? We are all
BRUNEIANS, or SINGAPOREANS, or MALAYSIANS, right? John

DAGING
BURGER: hALAL? Adakah Kita lalai?:
Saya menerima email mengenai barang-barang makanan yang dikatakan
halal tetapi sebenarnya TIDAK HALAL. Saya harap pihak yang
berwajip membuat kajian tentang hal ini. Kita patut berhati-hati
Saya
juga adanya pakar permakanan/ pembuat makanan membuat pandangan
tentang perkara berikut ini:
Subject: Fwd: Fw: daging bugger-HALAL???? [fwd]
MAKAN BABI KOT KITA NI................SABAR AJA LAH
MINTAK TOLONG SEMUA KAWAN-KAWAN BACA NI SAMPAI HABIS
Kes macam ni bukan kes baru. Memang betul cakap cina tu! daging
ayam danlembu tak cukup lemak untuk membentuk apa-apa shape. Jika
babi manakala pork product yg lain seperti lard(minyak
nipis daging babi yg biasa served during breakfast), pork
Jadi kalau sausage itu chicken or beef
still maintain pork.
pembaik pulih bekalan elektrik. Pada satu hari bapanya bertugas
membetulkan
bekalan elektirk di kawasan Jenjarum Banting. Semasa
pekerja-pekerja lain sedang melakukan kerja-kerja pembaikan pulih
bekalan beliau
telah merayau-rayau di kawasan sekitar. Setiap pekerja pembaiki
pulih
memasuki
sebuah kilang memproses makanan ,dilihatnya daging-daging ayam
berlongok-longok . Kemudian daging-daging babi berlongok-longok
disebelahan.
makan. Yang peliknya lagi kebanyakan yang jual burger tu orang
Melayu. Sukan Makan Burger & sOSEJ

terrorism/religion/politics:
My fellow Bruneians (and whoever else is reading), I hope you
understand that there is a difference between religion and
politics.
-politics (as defined by Oxford Dictionary- I looked it up) =
"the belief in a particular set of ideas, principles or set
of politics".
-religion (also from Oxford Dictionary) one of the meanings was
"the belief in a superhuman controlling power especially in a
personal God".
So from here it’s easy to see that although both carry the word
"BELIEF" , both words i.e. politics and religion have
very different meanings.
Terrorism has absolutely nothing to do with religion. Let’s be
honest, the first thing that comes into your mind when you say
"Terrorism" is death and destruction, right? And when
you say "Religion" the first thing you feel is peace,
right?
Palestinian and Israel. All about a piece of land called
Jerusalem. I haven’t read anywhere that says religion means
" the fight for a piece of land" . Have you?
USA versus Terrorist of World Trade Center = USA versus Religion?
(Please read above again if you don’t understand the meaning of
Terrorism)
Now lets talk about the Taliban. As explained clearly by one of
the writers called "Brudirect user",I
quote "Seeing this destruction and lawlessness, a group of
students called the Taliban, i.e. a group of students (Taliban is
the plural of student in our language; it may be two students in
Arabic, but in our language it means students) started a movement
called the Movement of Students" unquote. No mention at all
of "religious students", "religious movement",
"Movements of Religious students". This clearly shows
that the Taliban is NOT a religious movement as clearly stated by
this learned writer who claims to be part of the Taliban. And in
all his explanations of the forming of the Taliban to the end of
his letter, not once has he ever mentioned "religion".
Most of Afganistan is Muslim and the Taliban uses the Koranic Laws
as their laws of Government, right? But lets think about this
carefully. Lets mention the types of Political Goverment that are
familiar to us all in this world. They are 1) Democratic Goverment
2) Communist Goverment 3) Constitutional Government 4) Absolute
Monarchy 5) Dictatorships etc etc.
Are there types of Political Governments called 1) Islamic
Government 2) Christian Government 3) Buddhist Government 4)
Jewish Government
Yes Saddam Hussein is a Muslim but is his government an Islamic
Government? Dictator right?
George Bush (USA) is Christian, Christian Government? Democratic
right?
King Bhumipol (Thailand) is Buddhist, Buddhist Government?
Constitutional right?
King Faad (Saudi Arabia) is Muslim, Islamic Government? Absolute
Monarchy, right?
So, what does this all mean? well, this just means that if the
Taliban uses the Koranic Laws as its form of Goverment, it just
means that they dont know which or what type of Political
Goverment to use at the moment. This means their movement is not
all about religion. This means that Terrorist are not all Islamic
(take the IRA for example). That Islam does not mean Terror. That
the USA is looking for Terrorist (not "Religious Terrorist).
That this is not Christians agaisnt Muslims or Americans agaisnt
Arabs or Arabs agaisnt Americans or Muslims agaisnt Christians.
So for all those who still feel angry and revengeful because some
country ask for "Jihad" or "Holy War" , think
to urself "Is his cause Political or Religious?". (Did
George Bush or Blair say "We will wage a Holy War on our
enemies" first?)
I rest my case. Stupid 28.09.2001

What
is the output from the roadblock!:
Roadblock is a common sight on Brunei roads rather than a place of
interest to visit. It was going on for ages since the 70's.What do
we achieve from the roadblocks. Do we stop accidents with the
heavy casualties?. Frequent accidents on the traffic light yellow
box and causing fatality recently. How about our road system and
conditions and do we have enough awareness campaign to the public
and road user?
How about our officer’s mentality in handling such repeated
cases, which seems to be fading in time? It is time for us to
change our mindset and broaden our angle of view in tackling the
road safety but please not by setting up more and more roadblocks.
This will really bring a bad image to our country because the
tourists will think that the roadblocks are set up after a bank
robbery or for some fugitive on the run. Md.Budiman budiman@yahoo.com

Attacks
on WTC & Pentagon:
For all the atrocities done by the United States and Israel
towards smaller nations (particularly Islamic states), serve them
right. Let it be a good lesson for Washington & Tel Aviv
administration! For many years, we Muslims have to suffer, now let
the disbelievers suffer and go to hell. Serve the US for its
pro-Israel and its hidden agenda against Islam right! Stop
bullying smaller nations! Stop the atrocities! Stop the double
standards! Stop the imperialists!
By the way, the attacks could be a conspiracy by the Israeli
intelligence to undermine the Muslim Ummah and as a way to
disgrace Islam and to create hatred towards Islam!
Job well done for the attacks, especially on Pentagon. (The
Americans said before that, especially Washington is impossible to
be attacked! but now???) And now they are changing their operation
codename from 'Infinite Justice' to 'Enduring Freedom'. Why?
Afraid of Muslims not wanting to join forces because of that
codename? haha... funny! Osama II; Al-Qaeda Brunei k2_2k@yahoo.com

Perangai
Kebanyakkan Cikgu Di Sekolah:
Pinggai Berakas. Sekian untuk pengetahuan pihak yang berkenaan dan
juga untuk semua. Yani 27.09.2001

Reflex
action:
Disobeying traffic lights on road undoubtedly is a dangerous act.
However the imposing of fines up to B$8000 for first offence and
$20 000 for second offence in the event of disobeying traffic
light is totally insensible and ridiculous. It is like cracking a
nut with a sledge-hammer. We share the dismay of the recent

I don't know about you guys. Whenever I read our local news

referred to here a doctor come from China? And today's
article headlined "Chinese Woman

I mean, it's easier to read that a Malaysian is from Malaysia, or

from China - Chinese. I am a Bruneian Chinese, but I don't

is not only the administrative staff for this year SSEAYP
programme but she was also a participating youth for the SSEAYP
batch 1996, the same batch with me. I personally can't accept the
losses but I do acknowledge Allah's faith to IT's creations. The
members of SIM also feel very sorry and sad over the loss of the
Haji Tamrin, Vice President of BERSATU, En. Kamaludin, National
Leader of Indonesia and both Bruneian drivers. The demise of Hj
Tamrin is a great loss for BERSATU as he was one of the most
friendly and dedicated executives in BERSATU. Well, as a human
being in this world, we should be ready to face any kind of
consequences at any time. God is great with IT's qada' dan qadar.
Let us pray for them. May their soul rest in peace. This terrible
tragedy is going to be a long sad memory for the SSEAYP programme.
On behalf of SSEAYP International Malaysia, I would like to extend
our heartiest thanks and appreciation to the Government and people
of Brunei Darussalam under the Ruler of His Majesty for their kind
support and assistance given to all parties who have directly or
indirectly involved in this tragedy. They really made the
situation as calm as possible.
Once again, please convey our deepest condolence to the alumni of
BERSATU, the families and the entire member of SSEAYP nations for
the losses on this tragedy. MAY ALLAH BLESS THEIR SOULS.
Thank you to BruneiDirect too for your kind assistance on
circulating the latest updates on this tragedy. Syabas

Promail
Network:
I am puzzled with all the things that has happened this few months
regarding the Promail operation. In Malaysia a report said members
were looking for the Manager or the person in charge to give more
details/demand refund on the previous plan which the company
announced that it has been stopped. But why they can still start
the new plan. These things are happening in Brunei and in
Indonesia too.
Why no authorities have stopped this company from restructuring
the old plan before starting new plan? From what I know from my
friends, the marketing manager in Brunei still introduces the new
plan to public thus incurring more losses to the people. Everybody
knows that if the company can pay off the existing plan bonuses at
this moment why must he introduce the new plan? From my point of
view ProMail marketing introduced the new plan to lure the
new/fresh members as they do not have any fund to pay off the
existing members, with the support of the new member, at least
they have the staff's salary and office expenses paid off but
no member gets bonus. What happened in Miri? There they lured the
members to purchase the new plan at least 1 unit each if they
wanted to collect their bonuses. Of course the members will
purchase the new plan but lastly no pay out for the new plan. This
is something called cheating the consumer. The consumer does not
have to go through all of these things if the company operate
their business in a truthful manners. Hj Sidek hjsidek@hotmail.com

Sorry
for the Family of dead in injured people:
We were quite shocked when we heard this story. Just keep our eyes
on calendar and wait for the on broad reunion at Bangkok Port on
the coming 4th of October. Just read the details of the story in
the WWW.Bruneidirect.com,
and can't believe this accident could happen. This must be the
first and very serious accident even happened since we have run
the program over 28th years. I was the participant youth of
13th program in 1986. What I can only say is SORRY for the
FAMILIES of the unfortunate persons who are dead and injured in
this accident. Don't know what will be the effect of the following
years program. At least every party must take more care in
considering the safety of all the delegations and participants.

Tragic
Accident:
I will start with expressing my deep sympathies to those involved
in the tragic accident recently. I hope now that everyone,
especially in Brunei, whether they are the relevant authorities or
individuals would take this matter seriously, especially as a
caution and lesson.
I would like to comment on the driving trend in Brunei. A lot of
drivers/cars in Brunei, not the mention their driving etiquette,
are actually 'unjustifiable'. On two lanes roads, an example would
be the highway, right lane are not only for fast drivers whereas
the slower ones will be on the left ... but it is usually like ..
"I just wanna be where I feel I wanna be." I guess most
understand what I mean here.
Secondly, traffic lights ... yellow lights would mean "I
still can go (car will be accelerated faster, taking a
chance)" and red lights would mean "I can still go. (car
even accelerated even faster and taking even a bigger
chance)"
These are just few points that I would like to air. I am not
trying to criticise anything or anyone but I believe the relevant
authorities should now implement more stricter road regulations.
Perhaps, more 'working' cameras on every traffic light, improving
the road facilities to the uppermost safe standards etc. Frankly
speaking, regular roadblocks checking on vehicles standards are
definitely not enough. It is better safe than sorry especially
when it comes that the 'innocent' or 'not to be blamed' ones get
to be the victim. MIMIA 26.09.2001

Akiko was a very nice person, and that we the Mexican delegation

accident Accountability:
Enough condolences already. I want to focus on where we should put
the blame. This is not a small matter we can just push under the
carpet. Our Sultan was visibly shocked by this incident and we
should have some answers. If this happens in Japan, the Minister
responsible for road transport would have to face barrage of
questions from the media and would probably resign if the fault is
with his Ministry. In Brunei it seems all the Ministers can get
away with it. Well, not any more!! I want to know what are we
going to do about preventing this ever happen again. I want to
know now! I don’t care if the Minister, or Police Commissioner
or whoever, but someone has to step forward to reassure us that
they have new plans to prevent road traffic accidents like this
ever happening again. I expect to hear from the authorities within
3 weeks from now what new plans they have to prevent more tragic
road accidents. Venus 26.09.2001

Action:
I think the government should control the rentals of the business
buildings and keep an eye on the landlords especially in the town
area. This is done to boost the business development in Brunei as
well to prevent the landlords from overcharging their tenents.

Let's
us say a prayer:
Hi
fellow py's. Just got the news of the death of Akiko Shinohara (AKO)
in Brunei during the Ship program and was saddened by the news.
I had a chance to get to know her after the SIGA 2001 Thailand and
she was keeping in touch with me on the this year program.
She was very excited and was looking forward to be on board Nippon
Maru again, just like many of us. Let's pray for her and
wish her to be in a better world. I will miss her and I am
sure all of us will miss her as well. Pass this around to all
fellows py's around the region and let the spirits of SSEAYP live
on together with AKO Chan, she will be happy to know that she will
always live in the heart of this spirit. AKO Chan, keep
smiling. Victor Yeong vikthor@pacific.net.sg

Bus
accident:
My heartfelt condolences to all the victims. It is tragic
for the families, friends and the countries involved. But
how can this happen? From the impact and the interviews of
the survivors, it looks like the bus was travelling very fast and
tried to jump the red light! How can this be? Isn't this a
government driver? Doesn't anybody have any sense of safety
for one self and more importantly for the passengers? WHY,
why, why???? One cannot just resign to fate, this looks like
a case of sheer carelessness resulting in enormous casualties.
The Ministry of Culture, Youth and Sports has a lot to answer for
this and I hope - besides offering sympathies, it is time they
offer answers. Somebody ought to be responsible for this and
one cannot just blame the driver, but those who let him drive at
all should take the responsibility for this most tragic incident. Sad

deepest sympahty...:
I'm
ex-PY from Batch'95, and I come from Indonesia. I would like to
show my deepest sympathy to whole family, and also for SSEAYP
family. It is really a great loss for all of us. I received the
news yesterday, and I can't do anything beside pray, and hope that
some can survive from the accident. I just knew this morning, that
it is only brudirect that is reporting the accident in the net, I
just wonder why other newspapers or TV in Indonesia (or other
ASIAN country) not giving any report at all... This is a tragedy
for all SSEAYP family and ASEAN Country, but it's a 'lesson' for
us, that GOD try to remind us about something. We should try to
face it with strength...and life must go on. So if it's still
possible to continue the program, why not. This is going to be the
experience for all the participants and so also for the programme.

Easi
card:
Let me put it straight to Bush@us_goverment.ml,
regarding Easi card
1. Firstly your viewpoint of Easicard purpose is that it is for
easy connection. It's true but Easi is also for those whom can't
afford prima line, therefore those poor students, unemployed can't
afford, so use your brain befor you speak.
2. Not a community service Co, come on DST wouldn't associate
themselves with people like you, Islam teach us to be generous,
indeed Dst’s sole purpose is to generate profits but not at the
expense of the poor people.
Your comment proves that your are insensitive and easily
influenced, therefore please go back to school and get a better
moral education. If all people in Brunei start thinking like you
we feel sorry as we say your comment is like the Brainless Bush
who simply accuse others without producing proof. johan lee

my
heart goes out to you:
Dear beloved friends
of SSEAYOP and all their families, I am very sad and sorry to know
this tragedy happened, and I especially know Bang Kamal when he
was a program officer of the Indonesia-Canada Youth Exchange
Program 98/99 training camp in Cibubur.
He was a funny and nice person. He was also like a big brother to
us. I still remember how he told us the funny songs, like "kue
serabi" or "aku punya pisang", and also how smart
he taught us, and made us very bounded to each other and to feel
like being in a big family.
I was very shocked that this involved many people, and in the
program. I send to all the victims, and their friends and families
my deepest sympathy, my condolences and my prayers.
I do wish that Allah will give you all the strength to continue
this program, although I know it is very, very hard and difficult.
Please remember, that the show must go on, and please think that
they now rest in heaven, they will still stand beside you all, to
lead you and love you.
For the families and friends, my prayers are also be with you.

In
the memory of our Akiko:
Miss Akiko Shinohara, who passed away in the traffic accident on
23rd September 2001, was our youngest but brightest fellow youth
from the batch 1996 of JPY(Japanese participant youths).
We, all JPY, remember that she was one of the conductors of our
JPY chorus. As like she led our out-of-tune chorus in to the tied
harmony by her strong intention and lovely smile, her young sprit
and sincerity led us and other participant youths of ASEAN
countries to get united in harmony through 55-day SSEAYP Program.
Also she was quite active for the post-program activity which is
the most thing we are proud of her. Her active involvement in the
reception committee of SSEAYP Japan country program helped the
smooth launch of the establishment of the committee in 1997, and
her continuous support and attentive work at the committee and the
related organization proves us that she would do her great effort
at this year's SSEAYP as the administrative staff. No one could
expect that this tragedy would have happened.
We all still cannot believe what we have lost her from this world.
Her charm, her eyes, her smile, her words and her strength, we all
miss most. You might have gone there as you have to accompany the
other 4 souls together. I know that how you had always been, and
that is the most thing make me miss you.
I humbly here pray for the repose of Akiko and 4 victims' soul
here. Akko, our love for you will remain in our hearts as it does
now and forever. We will never forget your bright smile. Ikuko

Accident
in Brunei (SSEAYp 2001): It
is indeed a shock to hear about the tragedy of the national
leaders. I was one of the participants of the programme in 1987.
One of the injured Ms Grace Singapore National Leader was a fellow
PY that year. At a time when we are grieving about the innocent
people who were killed on Sept 11 in New York, We hear of
our good friends who have been killed by such an unexpected
accident who are travelling to promote goodwill and friendship.
This is indeed a 'black spot' in the SSEAYP, which has had a good
track record.
Thousands of youths who have travelled before on board the ship
know safety was utmost among the first priority emphasised by
administrative staff and the officials.
On behalf of all the PY's in Malaysia past & present please
accept our deepest condolences and sympathy on this tragedy. If
there is any help
we can render please contact us and we will respond immediately.
To Grace, we are thankful to god that you are safe and we pray for
your speedy recovery. Let this not dent the image of this program,
which has made this part of the world friendlier and peacefull.
With deepest sympathy K. Soma Sundram Youth Leader - Malaysian
Contingent 1987 SSEAYP. K. Soma Sundram somasun@tm.net.my

Horrendous
accident:
As always, Ministry of Culture & Youth is always slow to act
and respond. I'm referring to the recent horrendous accident that
killed 5 people from Southeast Asian Youth Programme. They (the
Ministry of Culture) should organised a nationwide donation for
families of all the deceased to show our sympathy and we're caring
society. Even His Majesty acted spontaneously and visited the
victims at the RIPAS Hospital when he heard the news about the
tragic accident, so why don't Ministry of Culture & Youth more
responsive? Is there something wrong with the management at that
Ministry? Caring Bruneian 24.09.2001

Feel
Sorry: I
feel sorry for SSEAYP 2001 during their program in Brunei. I,
one of the committee of SSEAYP 2001 country program in Indonesia
and also alumni of Indonesia-Australia youth exchange program,
was shocked when I heard this tragedy yesterday afternoon. I
knew the Indonesian National Leader, who was used to be called
by his nick name Bang Kamal, since 1996 when I attended the
national training for youth exchange participants in Jakarta.
For all participants, I hope they are feeling better and
stronger. All of us in Indonesia, especially in Surabaya, are
waiting for the program, which has already been planned for
14-17 October, 2001. Here
I write a song for SSEAYP 2001 : One In Blue Created by Ari
Sufiati
(This song is dedicated for the road accident victims during
SSEAYP 2001 in Brunei)
Look at the sky, look at the sea
All is blue
Here in our hearts, our feelings
All are blue
*Reff:
What was just happened, makes us stronger
What will happen, will happen, But we're still one
Hand in hand, through the sea
Say for peace
Love and care, for the world

Think again if there are 5 companies that sell the same product

third world
war:
The American plan to retaliate is very dangerous to everybody
because it might end up as the Third World War. I disagree with
their plan to bomb Afghanistan. The country is already poor and
they want to add more difficulties just because of one-person
Osama bin Laden. Even former US president says we don't have
sufficient evidence to prove Osama is guilty. Why not settle this
problem in a more diplomatic way. Why Americans have to involve
other nations and put pressure on them just because Americans are
rich and categorised as the Super Power. Kare karekara@hotmail.com

More
Israeli Suspicions:
Israeli Employees in WTC Absent the Day of the Attack: With
the announcement of the attacks at the World Trade Center in New
York, the international media, particularly the Israeli one,
hurried to take advantage of the incident and started mourning
4000 Israelis who work at the two towers. Then suddenly, no one
ever mentioned anything about those Israelis and later it became
clear that they remarkably did not show up at their jobs the day
the incident took place. No one talked about any Israeli being
killed or wounded in the attacks. Arab diplomatic sources revealed
to the Jordanian al-Watan newspaper that those Israelis remained
absent that day based on hints from the Israeli General Security
Apparatus, the Shabak, the fact which evoked unannounced
suspicions on American officials who wanted to know how the
Israeli government learned about the incident before it occurred,
and the reasons why it refrained from informing the U.S
authorities of the information it had. Suspicions had increased
further after Israeli newspaper Yadiot Ahranot revealed that the
Shabak prevented Israeli premier Ariel Sharon from traveling to
New York and particularly to the citys eastern coast to
participate in a festival organized by the Zionist organizations
in support of the "Israel". Aharon Bernie, the
commentator at the newspaper, brought up the issue and came up
with a negative conclusion, saying no answer. He then asked about
the clue behind the Shabaks position in preventing Sharons
participation, and again without giving an answer. Bernie added
that Sharon, who was delighted for having his speech on top of the
festival agenda, asked the head of the organization to mediate and
convince the Shabak to change its position, but his attempts were
in vein. The next day after Sharons secretary officially announced
that Sharon would not participate the incident took place. For its
part, the Israeli Haaretz newspaper revealed that the FBI arrested
five Israelis four hours after the attack on the Twin Towers
while filming the smoking skyline from the roof of their companys
building. The FBI had arrested the five for puzzling behavior.
They are said to have been caught videotaping the disaster in what
was interpreted as cries of joy and mockery. Citizen X

ANDANGNYA
DUNIA KAN KIAMAT:
Wahai penghuni bumi, sadartah. Bumi ani inda kekal selama lamanya.
kelak.
Apa dah jadi dengan dunia sekarang ? Perang, ya mungkin. Maka
dengan itu sadar tah. Banyak banyak beramal mungkin ini tandanya
kan kiamat. Jangkan tah kan mengapi apikan supaya mengajak
berbunuh karang terkena sendiri menyesal diri.
memain mainkan ugama. Katanya Islam berjihad untuk orang Islam
tetapi membunuh sesama manusia, meskipun tah kafir ia ciptaan
Allah jua. Berdosa jika orang Islam membunuh orang kafir yang
tidak menyakiti orang Islam. Kecuali ia menggangu orang Islam
sahaja.
Ani sampaikan $500 bayarannya. Eh Eh
Eh baiktah ku kepejabat ugama berkaunseling sama mereka secara
percuma.
Ingatlah manusia, jangan mudah terpengaruh dengan janji janji
manis yang boleh menyesatkan kita. Ani di lihat kitani mudah
percaya. Ingat pasal DAJAL. Ah, silap silap kediakan menyesatkan
kitani mana kitani tahu. Sebab atu tah tanya dahulu pejabat Ugama
orang Islam cuma tinggal nama sahaja.

The
Invisible Afghanistan - Sayyid Rahmatullah Hashemi:
The Invisible Afghanistan (of what the truth you don't see)
Posted: 20 Zul-Hijjah 1421, 16 March 2001
The Qur'an says, "O you who believe! If a rebellious evil
person comes to you with a news, verify it, lest you harm people
in ignorance, and afterwards you become regretful to what you have
done." [Al-Hujurat 49:6]
[Sayyid Rahmatullah Hashemi is the roving Ambassador from
Afghanistan who recently visited the US. The following is the
edited version of the transcription of a lecture given by him at
the University Of Southern California in Los Angeles, on March 10,
2001]
I was just coming from a meeting with a group of scholars, and the
first thing we started talking about there was the statues. It is
very unfortunate how little we see and how little we know. Nobody
has seen the problems of Afghanistan; nobody saw their problems
before. And the only thing that represents Afghanistan today are
the statues.
Afghanistan is called the Crossroads of Asia. So, we are suffering
because of our geo-strategic location. We have suffered in the
18th century, 19th century, and we are still suffering in this
century. We have not attacked the British. We have not attacked
the Russians. It was they who attacked us. So the problems in
Afghanistan you see are not of our creation.
The Soviet Invasion.
The rec11ent problems in Afghanistan started in 1979. Afghanistan
was a peaceful country. The Russians, along with their 140,000
troops attacked Afghanistan in the December of 1979, just 21 years
ago, stayed there for a decade, killed one and a half million
people, maimed one million more, and six million out of the
eighteen million people migrated because of the Russian
brutalities. Even today, our children are dying because of the
landmines that they planted for us. And nobody knows about this.
After the Russians left during the Russian occupation, on the
other side, the American government, the British government, the
French, the Chinese, and all of the rest, supported the
counter-revolutionaries called the Mujahideen; There were seven
parties only in Pakistan and eight parties in Iran who fought the
Russian occupation. And after the Russians left, these parties
went into Afghanistan. All of them had different ideologies, and a
lot of weapons. And instead of having a single administration,
they fought in Afghanistan. The destruction that they brought was
worse than the destruction the Russians brought. 63,000 people
were only killed in the capital, Kabul. Another million people
migrated because of this lawlessness.
The Beginning of Taliban.
Seeing this destruction and lawlessness, a group of students
called the Taliban, i.e. a group of students (Taliban is the
plural of student in our language; it may be two students in
Arabic, but in our language it means students) started a movement
called the Movement of Students. It first started in a village in
the southern province of Afghanistan, called Kandahar. It happened
when a warlord, or a commander abducted two minor girls and
violated them. The parents of those girls went to a school and
asked the teacher of the school to help them. The teacher of that
school, along with his 53 students, finding only 16 guns, went and
attacked the base of that commander. After releasing those two
girls, they hanged that commander, and so many of his people were
also hanged. This story was told everywhere. BBC also quoted this
story. Hearing this story, many other students joined this
movement and started disarming the rest of the warlords. This same
students movement now controls 95% of the country including its
capital. Only a bunch of those warlords are remaining in the
northern corridor of Afghanistan.
Our Achievements.
We have been in government for only five years, and the following
things that we have done, and many of you may not know:
1) The first thing we have done is reunifying the fragmented
country. Afghanistan was formerly fragmented into five parts. We
unified it when nobody else could do it.
2) Second thing we have done, which everybody failed to do, was
disarming the population. After the war every Afghan got a
Kalashnikov, and even sophisticated weapons such as stinger
missiles, and they even got fighter planes and fighter
helicopters. Disarming these people seemed to be impossible. The
United Nations in 1992 made an appeal asking for 3 billion dollars
to re-purchase those arms. And because of its impracticality, that
plan never materialized, and everybody forgot about Afghanistan.
So the second thing we have done is to disarm 95% of that country.
3) The third thing that we have done is to establish a single
administration in Afghanistan, which did not exist for 10 years
past.
4) The fourth achievement that we have that is surprising to
everybody is that we have eradicated 75% of world's opium
cultivation. Afghanistan produced 75% of world’s opium. And last
year we issued an edict asking the people to stop growing opium,
and this year, the United Nations Drug Control Program, UNDCP, and
their head, Mr. Barnard F. proudly announced that there was 0% of
opium cultivation. Zero, zilch, none at all.
Incidentally this was not good news for UN itself because many of
them lost their jobs. In the UNDCP, 700 so called experts were
working there and they got their salaries and they never went into
Afghanistan. So when we issued this edict, I know that they were
not happy. And this year they lost their jobs.
5) The fifth achievement that we have, is the restoration of Human
Rights. Now, you may think that we are involved in violation of
Human Rights. The reality is exactly the opposite. Among the
fundamental rights of a human being is the right to live. Before
us, nobody could live peacefully in Afghanistan.
The first thing we have done, is to give to the people a secure
and peaceful life. The second major thing that we have restored is
to give them free and fair justice; you don't have to buy justice,
unlike here. In Afghanistan justice is free and readily available.
Women's Rights
We have been criticized for violating women's rights. Do you know
what happened before us? I can see some Afghans living here, and
they will agree with me, that in the rural areas of Afghanistan,
women were used as animals. They were sold actually. We stopped
this abominable practice.
They didn't use to have any say in the selection of their
husbands. First thing we have done is to let them choose their
future.
Another thing that used to happen in Afghanistan was women were
exchanged as gifts. Of course, this was not something religious;
this was something cultural. When two fighting tribes wanted
reconciliation, they would exchange women. And this has been
stopped.
Unlike what is generally said women do work in Afghanistan. True
that until 1996 when we captured the capital Kabul, we did ask
women to stay home. It didn't mean that we wanted them to stay at
home forever. We said that there is no law, and there is no order,
and you have to stay at home.
We disarmed the people, and we established law and order, and now
women are working. True, that women are not working in the
ministry of defense, like here. We don't want our women to be
fighter pilots, or to be used as objects of decoration for
advertisements. But they do work. They work in the Ministry of
Health, Interior, Ministry of Education, Ministry of Social
Affairs, and so on.
Similarly we don't have any problem with women's education. We
have said that we want education, and we will have education
whether or not we are under anybody's pressure, because that is
part of our belief. We are ordered to do that. When we say that
there should be segregated schools, it does not mean that we don't
want our women to be educated. It is true that we are against
co-education; but it is not true that we are against women's
education.
We do have schools even now, but the problem is the resources. We
cannot expand these programs. Before, our government numerous
curriculums were going on. There were curriculum that preached for
the kings, curriculum that preached for the communists, and
curriculum from all the seven parties. So, the students were
confused as to what to study. We have started to unify the
curriculum and that is going on.
Recently we reopened the faculty of medical science in all major
cities of Afghanistan and in Kandahar. There are more girl
students studying in the faculty of medical sciences than boys.
But they are segregated. And the Swedish committees have also
established schools for girls. I know they are not enough, but
that is what we have been able to do.
Osama bin Laden
We are also accused of sponsoring terrorism. And for Americans
terrorism or terrorist means only bin Laden. Now you will not know
that bin Laden was in Afghanistan for 17 years before we even
existed. Bin Laden was in Afghanistan, fought the Soviet Union,
and Mr. Ronald Reagan, the president of America at that time, and
Mr. Dick Chaney called such people freedom fighters or the Heroes
of Independence, because they were fighting for their cause. And
now when the Soviet Union is fragmented, such people were not
needed anymore, they were transformed into terrorists. From heroes
to terrorists. This is exactly like Mr. Yasser Arafat who was
transformed from a terrorist to a hero.
What is the difference between those acts that bin Laden is blamed
for and the 1998 cruise missile attacks on Afghanistan. Neither of
the two were declared and both of them killed civilians. If it
means killing civilians blindly, both of them killed civilians
blindly.
The United States government tried to kill a man without even
giving him a fair trial. In 1998, they just sent cruise missiles
into Afghanistan and they announced that they were trying to kill
Osama bin Laden. We didn't know Osama bin Laden then. I didn't
know him; he was just a simple man. So we were all shocked. I was
one of those men who was sitting at home at night, I was called
for an immediate council meeting and we all were told the United
States had attacked Afghanistan. With 75 cruise missiles they
tried to kill one man. And they missed that man; killed 19 other
students and never apologized for those killings.
What would you do if you were in our situation? If we were to go
and send 75 cruise missiles into the United States and say that we
were going to kill a man that we thought was responsible for our
embassy, and we missed that man, and we killed 19 other Americans
what would the United States do? An instant declaration of war.
But we are polite. We did not declare war.
Our Proposals.
Rather we have been very open-minded on this issue. We have said,
that if really this man is involved in the Kenya/Tanzania acts, if
anybody can give us proof or evidence about his involvement in
these horrific acts, we will punish him. Nobody gave us evidence.
We put him on trial for 45 days and nobody gave us any kind of
evidence. The United States told us they did not believe in our
judicial system. We were surprised as to what kind of judicial
system they have? They just tried to kill a man without even
giving him a fair trial. Even if one of us is a criminal here, the
police are not going to blow his house; he must go to a court
first.
So our first proposal was rejected. They said they do not believe
in our judicial system, and we must extradite him to New York.
After the rejection of this first proposal was we said we were
ready to accept an international monitoring group to come into
Afghanistan and monitor this man's activities in Afghanistan. So
that he does nothing. Even that he has no telecommunications. That
proposal was also rejected.
The third proposal we gave, six months ago, was that we were ready
to try or accept the trial of Osama bin Laden in a third Islamic
country, with the consent of Saudi Arabia and Afghanistan. That
was also rejected.
We are still very open-minded. And for the fourth time, I m here,
with a letter from my leadership that I’m going to submit to the
State Department hoping that they will resolve the problem. But I
don't think that they'll. Because we think, and I personally think
now that maybe the United States is looking for a bogey man as
always. Remember what Gorbachev said? He said, that he's going to
do the worst thing ever to the United States. And everybody
thought that he's going to blow the United States with nuclear
weapons. But he said, I m going to remove their enemy. And then he
fragmented Soviet Union. And he was right. After he fragmented
Soviet Union, a lot of people lost their jobs in the Pentagon, in
the CIA, and the FBI, because they were not needed anymore. So we
think that maybe these guys are looking for a bogey man now. Maybe
they want to justify their annual budget, maybe they want to make
their citizens feel that they are still needed to defend them.
Afghanistan is not a terrorist state; we cannot even make a
needle. How are we going to be a terrorist state? How are we going
to be a threat to the world? If the world terrorism is really
derived from the word terror, then there are countries making
weapons of mass destruction, countries making nuclear weapons,
they are terrorist states; we are not.
Sanctions.
Now, we are under sanctions. And the sanctions have caused a lot
of problems. Despite that we already had been going through so
many problems--- the 23 years of continuous war, the total
destruction of our infrastructure, and the problem of refugees,
and the problem of land mines in our agricultural lands --- all of
a sudden the United Nations, with the provocation of Russia, is
imposing sanctions on Afghanistan. And the sanctions have been
approved; we are under sanctions. Several hundred children died a
month ago. Seven hundred children died because of malnutrition and
the severe cold weather. Nobody even talked about that. Everybody
knows about the statues (Bamiyan).
Renovating Statues as People Die
When the world is destroying our future with economic sanctions,
then they have no right to worry about our past. I called my
headquarters, I asked them, why are they going to blow the
statues, and I talked to the head of the council of scholars of
people, who had actually decided this, he told me that UNESCO and
an NGO from Sweden, or from one of these Scandinavian countries
Norway, Sweden, one of these they had actually come, with a
project of rebuilding the face of these statues, which have worn
by rain. The council of people told them to spend that money in
saving the lives of these children, instead of spending it to
restore these statues. And these guys said, "No, this money
is only for the statues." And the people were really pissed
off. They said that, If you don t care about our children, we are
going to blow those statues.
If you were in such a situation what would you do? If your
children are dying in front of your eyes, and you are under
sanctions, and then the same people who have imposed sanctions and
are coming and building statues here? What would you do?
Kofi Annan
And there is Kofi Annan. You know Kofi Annan, the Secretary
General of United Nations? He went to Pakistan, and he said he is
going to meet our representative there. This man never bothered to
come, to talk about these children, he never bothered himself to
talk about six million refugees, and he never talked about the
poverty of Afghanistan. He only goes to that region because of
these statues.
It is really, really ridiculous. These people do not care about
children, about people who are dying there, about the foreign
interference that still exists; they only care about the lifeless
statues. And I am sure they don't care about our heritage. They
only care about their picnic site one time. Maybe they'll have a
good picnic site there, seeing those statues.
And I'm sure these sanctions, which are imposed on our government
will never change us, because for us, our ideology is everything.
To try to change our ideology with economic sanctions will never
work. It may work in the United States, where the economy is
everything, but for us, our ideology is everything. And we believe
that it is better to die for something than to live for nothing. BruDirect

syaitan-influenced:
Just quickly reading through some of the views of the people here
truly reflect who MUSLIMS really are. Religion does not
teach the people to be:
1. Revengeful
2. Very very sensitive
3. Harbour anger and attack back be it by word or action
4. Bunuh sesama sendiri
syaitan..
After all, religion should bring peace, love and harmony to the
world. Observer 22.09.2001

IRA:
I hope the Americans are feeling guilty for supporting the IRA
terrorists. The IRA bombed and killed many people in the UK and
all because they were funded by money from the USA. Silly
Americans. Now they know what its like to be the receiving end of
a terrorist attack. Can you guys still remember the huge IRA bomb
in the City of London few years back? Thank you USA. Double
standard. Pro UK 21.09.2001

wizard:
This bugs me so much!!! I do hope the concerned management will
take this as constructive criticism. Actually I have lots of
friends in Brunei before I went back to UK. The thing that puzzles
me and them as well is the rate of Easi card. I am not against the
$45 load but there are instances that students for example can't
afford that high cost. May I suggest like in any other country,
why can't they lower load to be available such as $10, $15 or $20,
very economical, right? That's why we call Easi from the word
"easy" meaning even the jobless or students can easily
access one for them. Another thing is that its first time in my
life though I’ve been to many countries and not only Brunei, I
found that every time I receive or pick up a call, they'll charge
me, For Christ sake, come on, the concerned people have mercy on
us. If we run out of money does this simply mean goodbye and sorry
we can’t pick up phone calls or receive a call from our fellow
men? Once we call of course we must pay, but this is so
ridiculous why I am paying as well if people phone me???? If you
can’t publish it, I understand but I do hope they'll be informed
if you do. mihael Nicholas mnicholas98@yahoo.co.uk

Our
SEA games failure part 2:
I have to agree with Couch Potato views about the SEA Games
failure. He pointed out some strong facts with I hope could be
considered but as Bruneians know...most of this wont be heard. He
pointed out ; (1) We do not have any credible plans for sports
development in the country = Yes I have to agree, How many times
have you heard the Ministry of Youth and sports organise true
challenging tournament here locally? It’s just we have not moved
forward after the Brunei Sea Games: which I want to point out is
that the training system here, The lawn bowl won and the Ministry
retained their coach but what about the other sports? nope...the
other sports that didn’t win had their coaches sent packing and
yea..6 months before a big competition then you bring in a coach?
I don’t think so...You need at least 2 years for it! One of his
other view is: (3) Ministry of Education should have been
more aggressive in promoting sports amongst the schools in
Brunei. = Yes they have been promoting sports but untill
what point? They organised the Asian schools sepak takraw recently
but after that? what? Where are those students now? They also sent
the Asian Schools badminton team and then what? Same story again.
I also can confirm that they sent an Asian school bowling team
some time ago and I can also confirm that I have seen these
students play and sadly they were paying for their training with
their own money. This is some facts that I want to point out = why
send a team, then after one event finish, you people just leave
them alone and neglected? Only football has a proper training
scheme but what about the rest? You people have to think
professionally and think about the future. The next sea games is
coming around 2 years from now. The Sea Games is meant to be a
stepping-stone to bigger events not an event where Bruneians think
it’s really big. So why can’t we see our youths play in the
next sea games. An all U-23 team for the next sea games would be
great to see. Last but not least, Think about it. If u want to see
Brunei succeed better get up to it and change the whole sports
system that we currently have. Samseng Bula

CNN vs BBC:
Searching for an answer. CNN is very biased towards Muslim, BBC
taking no stand and impartial. So those subscribe to Kristal
Astrwould not know because no BBC. Kristal decorder subscriber
will know what I mean. So since Astro belongs to Malaysia I wish
they include BBC in the list of station so to give clear unbiased
news stories that that is broadcast by CNN. Hei, What happen to
our Muslim brother at CNN Ritz Khan? Perhaps they do not want him
now because he is a Muslim. Newcomer
