Bangladeshi
workers: I
read today's BB and found a quite interesting but by no means it
is good, news. "NO MEETING, JUST DONATE SOMETHING". The
article stated that the Chinese local businessmen rushed to the
Bangladeshi High Commissioner to give 'real' help to the deceased
and other Bangladeshi workers "while some 'LOCAL' business
associations are said to be busy convening so-called emergency
'MEETINGS' to assist the family of late Nurul Islam Dudumiah".
This may reflect our attitude of 'TOO MANY MEETINGS YET TOO LITTLE
WORK DONE'. Harmoko mr_harmokos@hotmail.com

Orang Brunei
Pengomplin?: To Light Bulb: I am not
worried about orang Brunei yang pengomplin. At least we know what
is in their minds. If they have something good to offer we
follow. If they are wrong then somebody out there will come
forward correcting them. Besides, kalau hanya berdasarkan
Brudirect page ani we only have people like Dadidu,
myself perhaps, Mdm Gasing, Domi,

Bruneians. Too little a number to be worried about. I am
more worried about the quiet lot! Angguk-angguk saja

Car prices:
Sham, if we take over the dealership to sell VW
Beetle we might be able to sell more than the current dealer. I am
sure you will follow the government price setting. We do not have
to have ultra luxury cars like Porches, because Ferdinand Porche
was ex worker of VW. I am also sure that you would only drive the
car that you are selling not some other cars sold by other
dealers. Just like a saying "practice what you preach".
Then the VW HQ would be happy. Look at Boustead boss, mana pakai

Who's singling
out whom, Dadidu:
If Dadidu has been following the argument along the
right track he would have realised that the Borneo Bulletin is the
one who started it all. Not that we are not appreciating other
people's success or the good side of their story but that side of
thing had already been more than totally covered by the Bulletin
and other papers. We are only offering the other aspects that the
papers had ignored. I am sure if the Bulletin had picked out a
maghrib football player or a non-practicing Muslim that is "jalan-jalan"
di kadai waktu asar, as Dadidu had pointed out, and
wrote a whole page about him that portrayed him as the national
hero based on that particular aspect of his life then the fairest
thing would be for someone to come out and point out what was
missing. Otherwise it is wise to leave him alone with his
favourite past time or correct him in private. SuperMel Smel@yahoo.com

In search of

A few days ago I wrote something on this matter. Little did I know
how things would transpire! I would like to apologise if my
thoughts have lead to anybody's feelings being hurt. To Paula
Malai Ali, I apologise if your reputation has been in anyway
tarnished. My article is not a direct attack on you. I never meant
it as such. I wish you well in all your endeavours. My main
concern was how the media has falsely portrayed/created the 'ideal

women out there whose skills, humility, beauty, generosity,
attitudes and so forth embodies that of the Bruneian Malay woman.
I would like them to be acknowledged too. Ladybird 19.04.2002

Just
face it.........Brunei is a very small market......not very
competitive when compared to other countries:
Awang Haji wahab bin juned says diversification is the answer for
Brunei’s economic future. The big question is.......how? we
should all know that the market in Brunei is very small and
if i forecast it in my view......it'll take probably a decade or
more just to get things started. I mean, there’s no point
opening up businesses in Brunei because of its market. Meaningless
to say, for example, when the government reduced the tax on cars
to 20% last year, it created a massive impact not just for those
who wanted to buy the newly slashed price cars but also sadly for
those who just bought the cars days before the tax cut it has been
a nightmare.
You see, that’s just one of the reasons Brunei needs to be aware
of consumers or people have their right to know what’s going on
now and what will happen in the near future so that forward
planning can be made easily.
I fully respect His Majesty's 8th National Development Plan as it
is for the best of Bruneians. One thing the government must know
about is to remove those government officers that are too lazy to
do their work and in a hurry to get back home. The government
should set up an Internal Security Agency where they can monitor
every government department or even officers for not doing their
job right for god knows how many years.
My conclusion is that, no matter how small the market in Brunei is
there’s always a GAP where you can get in Yours truly, ali

Facing
the aftermath 200% automobile tax reduction: What
would happen when you purchased your new car just before they
lifted the 200% vehicle tax? Ouch! That’s gotta hurt. I am sure
this has been taken into consideration before they lifted the tax.
The government must have a backup plan for these angry car owners.
You will get hundreds, if not thousands of cars this car owner
fleeing of giving up their loans. After all, why pay a current car
for $60,000 when you can give up and purchase a new car later for
$20,000. Two solutions start a 0% financial payoff to these car
owners and secondly, let the owner of these cars to claim their
tax return credit. Personally, I think the tax credits will do
just fine. Who will qualify for these tax credits? Perhaps,
purchasers within a year prior to lifting of the taxes. Bite the
bullet now or face another crisis in this fragile economy. Mark

UBD To Sad
Parrot: please put some of your free time to go to UBD and
browse through their extensive publications. You can have a quick
read at the library and if you are interested you can also buy
them. Not to forget, please look at the biographies of the local
academic staff and you will see that they have been presenting
their papers at conferences both local and international. Some of
them also have their articles published in international journals.
Do those things then you can get back to brudirect and
talk some more about the above issue. I have bought a few of their
publications maybe after reading yours we can sit down and discuss
some of the issues raised in some of these publications. UBD is
intensively trying to upgrade its human resources but as with
other organizations, private or public, significant improvements
are usually achieved through a very slow process. So please sad
parrot the least you could do is support UBD's efforts to
upgrade its staff. info booth

UBD lagi bah!:
That's the kind of comment that I think is much more appropriate.
Well, I heard that UBD has already published their first issue on
researches done in UBD (recently). However, to be well accepted in
the academics world, some of the lecturers should have their
articles published in the international journals. Thus, there is
no argument saying that UBD lecturers are not internationally
qualified. By the way, there is a dilemma among local lecturers
who just got their PHD. UBD has tried to send the locals to get
their PHD, sadly... after they finished doing their PHD, almost
all of them were being pulled into other government sectors. These
lecturers had to join that department (its an INSTRUCTION from the
top - not from the UBD management). Thus, how can one expect those
supposed to be lecturers to make their move and progress in
academic world? Therefore, it is not fair to put the blame totally
on UBD! In the case of Asia Inc, well, you are true there. But
there must some reason why there were not there. Can you ask the
Asia Inc people what happened? I can’t make any comment on this.
(By the way - A note of advise: Asia Inc. should work closely with
UBD academicians, just call any of the lecturers in UBD - for sure
they will be more delighted to contribute something). True

Police course:
To SuperMel: What a shallow thinking! You take
everything from the Internet and other sources without thinking.
Our Police Force will not learn from the Malaysians bout' those
dirty tricks and tactics. Surely our CP’s brilliant enough to
think what's to learn and what should not and there are many areas
we still need to learn and being in the same socio-economic,
political and geographical settings. I fervently believe that we
should learn from the Malaysians especially with the current
threats of terrorism. Try to imagine yourself in CP’s shoes and
you'll get the answer. It is an imperfect world, after all. One
more thing, don't ever buy everything said or written on the
Internet. I guess, you are mature enough to take what is right or
wrong, good or bad. Imagine the police force in Malaysia is doing
all the bad things all the time. By now Malaysia or even perhaps
Brunei would never feel at peace and survive as a nation. Think
about it...don't eat those bad apples...Thanks. Maznah 19.04.2002

Attitude orang

After reading the ideas and

Islamic Way of

To Ros, SuperMel : A lot of Muslims are not

SOAS! Bukan hendak menyokong sesiapa cuma kitani orang Brunei
menyanyi di HMI RTM - instead of kita mengucapkan tahniah
Islamic way of Life - pertama-tama kita tunjuk diri sendiri dulu -
apakah kita sendiri sudah mengamalkan islamic way of life? Di
sinilah kita sepatutnya sibuk-sibuk!

hari, 1 unit peti ais, 1 computer, 1 tv, 1 vcd, 1 sterika, 1 mesin
kos penggunaan elektrik saya. Pihak Perkhidmatan Elektrik
Memang benar Pihak Jabatan Perkhidmatan Elektrik membuat
terlepas begitu sahaja. HEH HEH HEH aku pakai meter prepaid....

Perempuan
Melayu Brunei Paula Malai Ali, Dadidu
Seperti
yg Dadidu katakan "kenapa kitani sibuk-sibuk?", banar
jua tu to a certain extent.
Bukan
salah ia seorang: ibu-bapa yg mendidik, persekitaran, suratan
hidup dll. Jadi kitani perlu jua "sibuk-sibuk" utk
jenerasi yg akan datang. Kitani perlu jua sibuk-sibuk untuk
dijadikan iktibar kpd ibu-bapa sebagai sukat-sukat dlm mendidik

bagaimana pandangan masyarakatnya mengenai satu-satu perkara atu.
Sesuatu atu mungkin menjadi kebanggaan atau 'a big thing' di dunia

pendirian sendiri ani inda mungkin kan teikut-ikut menyanjungnya
kalau sudah inda mengana dengan gaya kitani! Sesuatu yg
kitani 'enjoy' melihat orang lain melakukan atu inda semestinya

anak perempuan saya juga berkelakuan seperti atu. Kitani perlu jua

UBD in
dilemma: To sad parrot(cian jua) .... I would
like to comment on what you said. It seems that you have a very
good way in making other people look bad without even thinking of
why are things as it is. First of all ... I would like to comment
on your say that the UBD lecturers do not have any input in the
economy. Well I guess UBD lecturers have had done their job well.
Do you know that they did lots of researches and studies on Brunei
economy, social, etc, however, sadly to say that most of these
studies and researches were not put into action by relevant
authorities! To be a lecturer is not to get a name or whatsoever,
the lecturers do not have to appear on TV. Well, even if they want
to... will the relevant authorities e.g. the media want to invite
them to make comments? Obviously, they would not air any opinions
of the lecturers on their researches that find discrepancies with
the country's current economic, political or social structure.
Thus, it is not as easy as you say, I dare you to go on air first
and give your opinions to the public .... and let’s see what's
going to happen to you and your family. "Academicians
are there to give their opinions(scientific, empirical as well as
revelation based) - it is up to the relevant authorities whether
to use it or not". Wassalam. Bah atu saja. True

Confused
Car Dealer:
Well I do agree with Buyer 14.04.2002, it seems that
they are taking advantage of the buyers nowadays, WHAT? you see it
that prices are now very LOW price? chehhhhh what more you want?
Okay for example they appeal for like cheap prices but to install
air condition, radio, etc you have to pay additional, isn’t that
the same thing as buying the car as the previous old car price!.
We should be thankful that the government have take measures to
reduce the car prices, you want more PROFIT is it? SURE, DO like
this SELL CAR AT CHEAPER PRICE, THEN IF MORE THE PEOPLE DEMAND TO
BUY THAT CAR, THEN ISN’T THAT A PROFIT, you don’t get it? You
sell 10 cars, but cheaper price, if more people want to buy that
car then you can HAVE PROFIT, because more people are buying that
CAR, so you can have more PROFIT. Haiyaaa what’s the point of
selling car if they don’t feel everything is right, too
expensive a problem, cheaper price also a problem, what’s wrong
with you people?, just try to be reasonable, okay. Cheers. No hard
feelings and harm intended. Thanks. Buyer 14.04.2002

Congratulations! the Royal Brunei Police Force and the raiding

wealth and security of Brunei forest. It must have been a hard
decision to gun down a man but to saveguard the reputation and
sovereignty of Brunei and its lawa and regulations it had to be

for money as my car number plate was not from Miri. I put my hard
earned $ where I feel safe not trapped...in fear. Limbangian

Melayu Brunei Paula Malai Ali:
TO: Wonder 16.04.2002: Paula Malai Ali has made a
decision for herself and she succeeds because worked for it - so
why are we sibuk-sibuk? If she is listed as a successful Bruneien
- I don’t think she is the one who writes the list - so why are
we sibuk-sibuk? If she is listed as one of the sexiest women I
don't think she campaigned for it - so why are we sibuk-sibuk? She
is just being truthful to her heart's calling, which I can't say
is true for most of us. Dadidu dadidu_hm@hotmail.com

Melayu Brunei Paula Malai Ali:
Why are you now claiming yourself to be a Bruneian, when you have
criticised Brunei & the people in the first place? If,
as you say, that you are a Bruneian you should know the culture
here. We're not old fashioned we've mature. I guess
migrating to Malaysia was a wise decision for you. You've got what
you wanted after all - fame & fortune. But being listed as a
successful Bruneian, you should be void from that category, as you
never really wished to be one. Unlike your sister Jenny, well, I
applaud her. Wonder 16.04.2002

Shocked:
I hate to say this, but I have to agree with the other people in
this forum. I think the incident in Manchester was mild compared
to what I've been exposed to. We are talking about full-blown
intercourse with a number of other Brunei students in the same
room. Alcohol is no excuse for this kind of behaviour. There needs
to be something done to stop our young from turning this way. Malay

It
is true what Pak Sako is saying. I had heard and
later I saw these pictures. But to be fair to this lady I would
like to say that most of these photos were candid shots. So let us
forget about this matter. Kasian that lady also and the last I
head was that she already had found a good job in a semi
government sector in Seria. So let us, as good Muslims, and
charitable human beings, be kind and considerate and leave her
alone. Nurnilam
