Kuala Belait
- A ground breaking ceremony to officiate the start of the
Kargu Dam and Reservoir project was held yesterday morning in the
Belait District.
|
The dam comes as an answer to the
growing need of water for industries based in Kuala Belait,
which is expected to rise further as the Sungai Liang Industrial
Park (SPARK) is taking shape.
The B$34.5 million dam and
reservoir will be completed by year 2010.
Pehin
Orang Kaya Hamzah Pahlawan Dato Seri Setia Awang Hj Abdullah bin
Begawan Mudim Dato Paduka Hj Bakar, Minister of Development,
officiated the ceremony.
Also in attendance were Dato
Paduka Dr Awang Hj Mat Suny bin Hj Mohd Hussein, Deputy Minister
of Development; Hj Mohd Rozan bin Dato Paduka Hj Mohd Yunos and
Dato Paduka Hj Rashid bin Hj Abdul Rahman, Permanent Secretaries
at the Ministry of Development, as well as senior officials from
the Public Works Department.

Upon completion, the Kargu Dam and
Reservoir located at the upper reaches of Sungai Kargu,
approximately 10 kilometres south of Sungai Liang, will increase
the capacity of water supply in Belait District and also reduce
the risk of water shortages in the area during dry spells.
|
The reservoir, once completed, will
be able to store 10 million cubic metres of raw water, which will be
released at times of low flow in the Belait River to meet the demand
for water at the Badas pumping stations by JICR, DSP and BLNG.
The 26-metre high dam across the
Kargu River is yet another project under the Public Works Department
through the Department of Water Services to ensure that the supply
for water is matched by the increasing demands in the district.
The dam will impound water from
catchments areas over 1,439 hectares and create a lake of 220
hectares. The works will include an earth dam, diversion culvert,
spillway chute, draw off tower and operations building. The project,
which started in October 2007, is expected to be complete by April
2010.
In an interview with the Acting
Director of Water Services, Abu Hanipah Bin Hj Talip, he said,
"There are currently four dams in Brunei and two more dams are in
the pipeline (including the Kargu dam).
"Brunei's biggest dam is expected
to take shape in the next NDP (National Development Plan) and there
are some other dams still in the planning process.
"I foresee in the coming years, the
biggest dam will be in the Belait District to meet the growing
demand for industrial activities”. --
