Bandar Seri
Begawan - Three private schools in Kuala Belait, led by
Hornbill School, have come together to launch a novel "University
for Children", a community education project that hopes to make
learning exciting for young students beyond the confines of the
school curriculum.

Hornbill, St Margaret's and St
John's Schools in the Belait District launched the children's
university Monday evening.
The Brunei Children's
University is currently for students aged seven to 13 years from
the three schools but there are plans to extend it to other
schools in the district.
The opening ceremony took place
at Hornibll School in Seria. The unveiling of the plaque was
done by the Deputy Chief of Staff Brunei Garrison cum Chairman
School Governance Committee of Hornbill School, Major Andrew
Vick.
Courses for the Children's
University consist of four modules that will be held in the

workshop in St John's School.
At the launching ceremony, a
presentation on the university was made to guests and parents
followed by a Nepali and traditional dance by students from the
three schools to add colour to the event.
Later, guests, parents and
students visited different sections in the hall to meet with
tutors offering various modules for the University of Children.
The idea for the University for
Children was first suggested and discussed at Hornbill School
sometime in May and the concept was further developed with the
cooperation of St John's and St Margaret's Schools.
The objectives of the
children's university are to promote and develop children's
awareness of other cultures and also enable students to explore
a wider choice of challenging experiences and interests. |
Each University for Children term
will last for three to six weeks and interested students can apply
for a place on any of the modules offered. The lessons take place
every Tuesday and Thursday between 3.15pm and 4.30pm and each lesson
will last for 75 minutes.
The lessons are not set at school
time and are not part of the school curriculum. Each student has to
volunteer his or her own time and sign a contract to attend all
lessons.
Upon completion of a module, all
students will be awarded with a University for Children certificate,
which will be presented annually at a special awards ceremony.
