Instilling Leadership Value Among Students A Valuable Investment
By Ak Kamal Ghadafi Pg Hj Suhaimi

Bandar Seri Begawan - Having a sense of pride for your country is one of the utmost important values that a student should have, for his own benefit and that of the nation.

Values such as this are a must for every student during his educational upbringing. The sense of contribution for the development of the nation -be it in socio-politics or socio-economy - will benefit the country in the future.

Instilling leadership value among students is a valuable investment, ensuring that students and youths become valuable assets to the country.

In Brunei Darussalam, students and youths are encouraged to participate in activities that will be beneficial to themselves and the nation as a whole.

One example of this is their participation in student councils at schools, colleges and other learning institutions throughout the country.

Generally, student council programmes will include seminars and orientations, which will teach students about time management, leadership qualities and ethics, among others.

Students and youths should be given more chances in the development of society, becoming the voice in contributing towards the national development.

The voice of the youths - with guidance from the elderly and professionals - should be given priority and treated seriously, particularly in this era of globalisation, where students and youths are much more exposed to the ethics and ways of the world. The world had now change and will continue to do so. Many are either left behind or remain dormant to the world's development.

As Robert Kiyosaki puts it, "With the situation now, we need more leaders than followers."

That is why in this article, I stress on the need for students to be ready for the situation that has changed and will continue to change.

Ever since the National Youth Day was established by the government of His Majesty, many have seen the importance of youths in their contribution towards the country.

To create youths that should and could contribute to the nation's importance, we need to nurture them from the very beginning. This should start at home and at the learning institutions.

Student leadership is a very important matter for youths to excel in their future and for them to guide the future generations.

Being a member of the student's council and other organisations should be valued highly by parents and peers.

The amount of time invested by them should be kept to the maximum.

It has been said that leaders are also teachers, leaders can inspire you to be bigger than your doubts and fears, some leaders have vision and teach others to see.

One example is Winston Churchill, who saw the problems that Europe faced after the Second World War.

The students must have instilled in them the passion and focus that will be needed for the future.

In my opinion, it is not enough for students to excel in their studies but lack leadership values, as these values are important for them to lead others in their future career that they will endeavour in.

As Donald Trump puts it, "Without passion you don't have energy without energy you have nothing. These are not the times to withdraw from the world arena, if anything; we all need more passion and energy in order to deal with what's going on."   -- Courtesy of Borneo Bulletin
