Arabic Curriculum Is Needed

Begawan - Lack of expertise in developing the Arabic
curriculum to suit Bruneian students and the absence of a centre to
preparing the textbooks required were some of the problems faced for
teaching and learning the language.
Ustazah
Hjh Fatimah Hj Abd Ghani, Acting Director of Islamic Studies
emphasised this at the closing and certificate presentation ceremony
for the National Workshop on the Preparation and Development of
Arabic Language Curriculum Material, yesterday.
"In the world of Islam, teaching
and learning Arabic is a matter with the upmost attention,
especially for non-Arabic countries," Ustazah Hjh Fatimah said.
The five-day workshop, which
commenced on September 5 ended after more that 14 topics being
presented. Proposed solutions for the challenges were also
discussed.
In her remarks, Ustazah Hjh Fatimah
expressed hope that the participants would practised what they had
learnt from the workshop at their respective schools, and improve
the quality of teaching of the language in the sultanate.
The national workshop was organised
by the Ministry of Religious Affairs and the Ministry of Education,
with the co-operation from The Islamic Educational, Scientific and
Cultural Organisation (ISESCO) to prepare a curriculum for Arabic
Language, for non-Arabic speaking students.
Some participants comprised of
officers from the Islamic Studies Department, Ministry of Religious
Affairs, Ministry of Education, the Seri Begawan Religious Teachers
University College, Institut Tahfiz al-Quran Sultan Haji Hassanal
Bolkiah and Arabic schools from the country's four districts,
participated in the workshop.
Speaking on behalf of the
participants, Ak Hj Md Shahrin Pg Hj Shamsuddin, thanked the
facilitator for their contribution of ideas and giving them a
valuable knowledge throughout the workshop.
"The topics discussed were very
important, especially on the drafting and, developing curriculum,"
he said.
Other topics being discussed
included on textbooks, teaching methodology, and teaching aids that
could be used in classroom.
Present at the event, as the
honoured guest, was the Acting Permanent Secretary at the Ministry
of Religious Affairs, Dato Paduka Hj Ishaaq Hj Abdullah, who
presented certificates and souvenirs to the participants.-- Courtesy of
