Apec Meet Important To Australia
By Sonia K in Sydney
Sydney -
"This is a very exciting time for Australia to welcome
leaders from 21 of the most important economies of the world."
This was said by Australian
Minister of Trade Warren Truss at a media opportunity, International
Media Centre in Sydney, Australia.
He added that the Asia Pacific
Economic Cooperation (Apec) "makes up 50 per cent of the world's
trade. But I for Australia, the economies represented at this
meeting account for 70 per cent of our trade. So, the gathering and
meeting held over the next couple of days are particularly important
for a country like Australia".
According to the Australian
minister, the first and foremost item on the agenda is the current
state of negotiations in relation to the Doha Round.
"Our ambassadors are meeting in
Geneva to talk through the way in which we can best progress the
issues," Truss said. "I will particularly be interested in the input
of trade minister of the Apec region in relation to the Doha Round,
looking at what they hope to achieve and what we may be able to
contribute towards those discussions."
Over the next few days, the Apec
economies will be looking at what they can do to break down the
barriers and trade between countries,
One of Apec's great successes has
been the reduction of behind-the-border barriers. Truss believes
that Apec economies can make further advances, and there will be a
positive statement about those issues included in the deliberation
at the end of the meeting.
