Bandar Seri Begawan - In an effort to provide quality services and programmes to enable all students to reach their full potential, the Ministry of Education through the Special Education Unit has organised a number of in-service training programmes for teachers to ensure that they are well informed about recent developments in special education.

One such professional development programme is the two-day national seminar and workshop on "Curriculum Guide for Students with High Support Needs", which commenced yesterday at the Civil Service Institute in Rimba.

On hand to officiate the launching of the seminar and workshop was the guest of honour, Dyg Hjh Donnaliza bte Abdullah Puasa, the Director of Schools' Inspectorate and Acting Head of Special Education Unit.

A keynote address was delivered by Levan Lim, an associate professor from the National Institute of Education, Singapore.

A guest speaker, Vincent Yeo, the Curriculum Director from the Association for Persons with Special Needs, Singapore, meanwhile, shared his expertise on implementing instructional strategies and activities for students with intellectual impairment.

Levan and Vincent also delivered a talk on "Reference Framework for the Effective Use of the Curriculum Guide for Students with High Support Needs".

The Special Education Unit believes that it is crucial for teachers and other professionals to participate in such programmes. The enhancement of teachers' personal and professional development in special education is a key objective of the Special Education Unit.

The Special Education Unit believes that the quality of education provided for children is of critical importance to the country. In light of this, the Ministry of Education sees the importance for all community members to ensure that children have the opportunity to become contributing members of society.

The Special Education Unit continues to strive to ensure the provision of appropriate teaching training, school facilities, special education resources and specialist support services.

It is hoped that the two-day seminar and workshop programme will help all participants gain new knowledge and skills on special education.

At the closing of the seminar and workshop today, certificates will be presented to over 300 participants.  -- Courtesy of Borneo Bulletin
