Indiscriminate Dumping Mars Lambak Kanan Mosque
By Rosli Abidin Yahya

Bandar Seri begawan - The back alleys of Perumahan Lambak Kanan Mosque in Berakas are overflowing with rubbish that has been indiscriminately dumped by litterbugs.

The area is fast becoming an unauthorised garbage disposal point as residents continue to ignore pleas to keep the area clean and free from rubbish.

A member of the Perumahan Lambak Kanan Neighbourhood Watch, Shamsuddin Abdullah, said the area needs signage to warn people not to throw their rubbish there.

"In the past, we successfully prevented people from throwing their rubbish indiscriminately in other places in the area by erecting a sign post.

"However, some people choose to dispose their rubbish at other unmarked secluded areas and not at proper disposal areas," he said.

He also suggested for rubbish to be collected from every house in the resettlement village and the residents be charged a minimal amount for the service. "Whether they like or not, the service must be forcefully offered to residents as we need to have a clean environment for health reasons.

"Uncollected rubbish at illegal garbage points is a potential place for diseases to spread as well as attracting wild dogs, stray cats, rats, snakes and other pests," he added.

At present, residents in the area can opt for their rubbish to be thrown away by private disposal companies by paying them a fee each month. However, some residents may want to save money and opt to throw the rubbish themselves, Shamsuddin said.

"They can do so at specified locations, which are quite far away from the area. But some feel the journey is too far and choose to indiscriminately dump their rubbish at the back alleys of the mosque. This has got to stop," he added. -- Courtesy of Borneo Bulletin
