Contest
By James Kon
Bandar Seri
Begawan - UBD student Miss Lina Salwana emerged top in the 20th
Japanese Speech Contest Advanced Level, which was held at the Civil
Service Institute (IPA) recently.
Ms Lina previously came in second in
the same category last year. She has been studying Japanese for three
years at Universiti Brunei Darussalam. She entered the Advanced Level
contest with her speech titled, "Education for the Handicapped
Children in Brunei".
Her hard work was rewarded with the
first prize and an opportunity to visit Japan and experience Japanese
culture while practicing the language with native speakers.
Ms Lina will travel to Japan on
October 1, when winners from other Asean countries will gather to
demonstrate their winning speeches in public. She is also scheduled to
visit several interesting places such as the Nikko, Asakusa and Tokyo
Disneyland.
Each year, in autumn, the Japan
Overseas Enterprises Association invites the winners of Japanese
Speech Contests held in Asean countries to Japan as part of its
programme of international exchanges.
The association provides
accommodation and bears other related costs of stay and travel in
Japan. The supporting organisations of the speech contest in Brunei
Darussalam, the Brunei-Japan Friendship Association, Japan-Brunei
Friendship Association and the Japanese Association, will sponsor her
return air-ticket to Japan.
The 20'1 Japanese Speech Contest is
aimed at encouraging contestants to give a public demonstration of
their competency in Japanese.
The speech contest was divided into
two categories, Beginner's Level and Advanced Level. The Beginner's
Level was set for students who have studied the Japanese language for
less than two years. The Advanced Level was set for those who have
studied for more than two years.
Students who have studied for less
than two years were also able to participate in the Advanced Level if
they wanted to.
In total, 20 Japanese language
students participated in this year's contest delivering their original
speeches to the audience.
The audience and the judges were very
impressed by the high level of Japanese language proficiency, the
interesting contents of the speeches and the good presentation skills
of those who took part. -- Courtesy of Borneo
