Quarters
By Liza Mohd
Bandar Seri
Begawan - Eleven contract workers managed to escape unhurt
after a fire gutted their quarters in Kampong Baru, Jalan Badas Seria
early yesterday morning.
While no one was injured in the
incident, two vehicles were ravaged by the flames, which were believed
to have been sparked by a short-circuit at the main switch-board.
The workers managed to save important
documents such as passports and identity cards.
The house where the fire occurred at
about lam is part of a concrete double-storey home rented to contract
workers and six Malaysian nationals staying at the ground floor. Only
the wooden upper floor of the house was burnt down.
The Seria fire station received an
emergency call at 1.58am and when 15 firefighters arrived at the
scene, large flames had engulfed the upper floor.
But the firefighters managed to
control the fire from spreading within 15 minutes and received
assistance from Brunei Shell Bomba.
According to reports by the Operation
B Fire and Rescue Department, it was initially a small fire but had
spread uncontrollably. Neighbours attempted to assist but failed to
put out the fire and contacted the fire station. The damage is still
being ascertained. -- Courtesy of Borneo
